S.V. man killed in traffic accident
A Simi Valley man died this morning after his motorcycle collided with a sports utility vehicle.
Russell Woodrow Coplin, 54, was pronounced dead at Simi Valley Hospital, where he was taken after the accident, according to the Simi Valley Police Department.
Coplin was driving his motorcycle westbound on Mayfair Street about 7:33 a.m. when the collision occurred. The SUV was making a left turn from Mayfair street eastbound to Winthrop Court northbound.
Angeline Harris, 56, of Simi Valley was not injured in the crash.
Police were still investigating the cause of the crash this afternoon.

at the age of 54 i'm sure he has been riding for some time of his life, and knows what he was doing. it doesn't even say where he was, only what the SUV was doing. until we know that there's know way to know who was at fault. i pray for the victim and his family, and for the lady that hit him, i'm sure it isn't easy to cope with something like this.

Yeah right, the dude on the Motorcycle said "I want to crash into this car and die" wake up, 99.9% of the time its the car that cuts off the bike. thanks to the person in the car, the guy is dead and the family has to suffer over this.
keep your eyes open!

Is anyone sure who or what caused the accident? Seems like everytime there is a tragedy, which this definitely is, the bloggers take it as an opportunity to make rash statements based on a personal experience or viewpoint and then pass blame without knowing what actually happened. We've all seen negligent cars and negligent cyclists, and I'm sure there are statistics to make one group more at fault than the other. This is nothing personal, but I think those making assumptions should wait for the facts before demonstrating their ignorance.
My condolences to the families.

Just jump to conclusions everyone before you know the facts. What a bunch of ignorant idiots.

To Tabitha_D, the article DOES say the motorcycle was (W/B on Mayfair) and the car he collided with was approaching from the OPPOSITE direction and turned left. To commenters, one could argue the motorcycle may have been speeding or the car driver committed a right-of-way violation. IF there are VIABLE witnesses, the police MAY learn who is primarily at fault; if the other party did something wrong too, that would be an Associated Factor. Instead of making automatic assumptions as to who was at fault, why don't we let the police who are "still investigating", complete their investigation... then throw darts. Once the dust settles and the sharks (lawyers) come out, I'm sure it will get ugly, but monetarily settled out of court. In the meantime, we have one dead person and one whose heart is no doubt severely wounded.

I agree. This is a terrible tragedy. No matter who was at fault it was an accident. People are so fast to throw blame when we dont know all the details. My prayers do go out to both the man who was killed, his family and the other driver.

last time I heard, left turn yields the right of way to oncoming traffic. Unless of course you you're on the cell, then you do what ever you feel like.

I'd be willing to bet a cell phone contributed to the accident. Too many morons driving around with a cell phone stuck in their ear. Cell phone drivers are at least as bad as a drunk driver. And if you are one to say you know how to drive safely with a cell phone, well you're probably one of the worse ones because you are unablr to realive you are a hazzard.
Will "hand's free" help next July? Not really, the worst time is while looking down to dial a number. Oh, and how about the stupid morons that text message while driving. I hope comeone else on a cell oell phone runs over the rest of the idiots on phones to see how they feel about this then.......

I was at the scene just after it happened. My condolences go out to faminly and friends of Mr. Coplin. For those casting judgement, it was in a residential area, Mr. Coplin (the motorcyclist) was at a stop sign making a left turn while the SUV was making a left into the cultasac. When I was leaving after the police left the scene, I approached the same stop sign to make the left. There was a full size van parked on the corner blocking my view of on-comming traffic from the right so I had to creep out quite a bit to see around it. It must have been hard for them to see eachother. The police are not pressing charges which leads me to believe it was an accident and not gross neglegance on either part.

I appreciate all the well wishes from all of you.
My step father was a good man.
You need to take a look at the scene to know the facts. He has never had a ticket let alone an accident.
Angeline already admitted that the sun was in her eyes and she didn't see him.
My father was headed down Mayfair while Angiline went to make a left onto Winthrop from Mayfair.
She has already admitted fault to the accident. It is still under investigation.
