Used-book sale on tap at library
The Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library will sponsor a used-book sale from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Newbury Park Branch Library.
The sale will feature a large collection of U.S. military history books on World War II, as well as an assortment of LP records and manga comics.
More than 10,000 books will be available, priced from 35 cents for children's books to $1 for hardbacks.
Book donations are accepted throughout the year, and used books are on sale daily, at both the Grant R. Brimhall Library in Thousand Oaks and the Newbury Park Branch Library.
The Newbury Park Branch Library is at 2331 Borchard Road. Admission to the sale and parking are free.

Landscape painting focus of demo at mall
Contemporary impressionist and Thousand Oaks resident David C. Gallup will present a free demonstration and discussion of his landscape painting techniques from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at The Oaks mall in Thousand Oaks. The presentation is sponsored by the Museum of Ventura County as part of its temporary satellite location at The Oaks.
Attendees also can see the museum's exhibit, "Nature Observed: Painting, Sculpture and Photography," running through Labor Day.
The museum satellite is on the upper-level northeast end of The Oaks at 222 W. Hillcrest Drive.
Admission to the presentation and exhibit is free, and exhibit hours are noon to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays.

Conejo Comedy Night' promises laughter
"Comedy Night in the Conejo," a one-night program of laughter and music, will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Watercourt Complex, 880-V Hampshire Road, Westlake Village.
The show, titled "Enlighten Up: Ahas and Ha-Has From the Funniest Women On Earth," features stand-up comics Vanda Mikoloksi and Amy Stiller, plus the musical talents of singer-songwriter Cherie Deeds and musician-singer David Sessions.
Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Proceeds benefit the Westlake Church of Religious Science. For tickets, call 495-0105, ext. 3.
Pirate Days coming to Harbor Village
Ventura Harbor Village will play host Pirate Days, turning the harbor into a pirate's cove, from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
There will be strolling pirates, fire eating, sword fights, costume contests, treasure hunts and an underwater sea maze.

Obon Fest to celebrate Japanese food, culture
The 52nd annual Obon Festival, sponsored by the Oxnard Buddhist Temple, is scheduled for 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday at 250 South H St., Oxnard.
The free event will feature Japanese foods such as teriyaki chicken and beef, sushi, udon, and pastries such as manju and mochi.
In addition to judo, bonsai, origami, crafts and workshops, Obon dancing will be presented at 6 and 8 p.m.

Animal shelter offers pet adoption fair
The Ventura County Camarillo Animal Shelter will have its annual pet adoptathon from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Admission is free. The overabundance of dogs, cats and other pets in need of homes is the main reason for this adoption fair, sponsored by Rescue Me Inc.
Animals of all sizes and breeds will be available for adoption and ready to take home Sunday.
Adopters will receive a gift bag, on-site reduced-rate microchipping, on-site reduced-rate rabies vaccination, on-site pet licensing, and a free vet visit for their new family member.
Camarillo Community Theater is offering two free tickets to the production of "The Diary of Anne Frank" to each adopter who stops by its booth with adoption papers.
