County to educate public on wildfire evacuations

The Ventura County Fire Department is launching an educational campaign to help residents decide either to evacuate early during wildfires or stay and defend their homes.

The "Evacuate Early or Stay and Defend" campaign will offer checklists to help residents determine the safest course of action when a wildfire strikes.

Last-minute evacuations are a major safety hazard during a wildfire, fire officials said. They often clog roads, making it harder for firefighters and other emergency personnel to do their jobs, according to authorities.

Owners of fire-resistant homes who have done proper brush clearance and are well-prepared can help defend their properties, officials said.
