Whisenhunt: Boats breeze along in Platform A Race

stan

Breezy conditions made for fast going Saturday in Anacapa Yacht Club's 41-mile Platform A Race.

John Thawley's Mull 30, XS, took first in Class A and first overall, and was one of four boats which sailed the course in less than seven hours.

The fastest boat on elapsed time and taking fourth on corrected time, was Alex Blankfield's Santa Cruz 50, Deception, which took just 6 hours, 11 minutes, 10 seconds to complete the course.

Taking first in the non-spinnaker class B was Sunny Girl, skippered by Ira Bigeleisen.

The race was the second in AYC's Anacapa Island Series. The final race in the series will be the Wes Golemon Memorial Race around Anacapa on Aug. 11.

In the see-saw battle for the lead in the county high point standings, Richard Sharpe's Olson 30, Perfect Balance, finished ahead of Avery Stewart's Olson 30, Bikini Machine and now trails by just two points. Five trophies are awarded by Affinity Bank for the high point standings and just seven points separate the next four boats behind Bikini Machine and Perfect Balance.

The boat which normally takes elapsed-time honors — Bill Gibbs' 54-foot catamaran, Afterburner — dropped out of the race early, apparently with equipment problems.
