Oak Park High's Whelan attends elite camp
Oak Park High's Corey Whelan attended the Top 205 Rising Seniors' Camp/Tournament playing on team No. 5 coached by NCAA coaches from Mount Saint Mary's and St. Vincent colleges.
Whelan's team was unbeaten until a final goal in a semifinal game loss. Team No. 5 was 7-1. Whelan was the only Conejo Valley player at the camp, featuring other players from San Diego and Northern California as well as players from Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Texas and Missouri.
Whelan's team placed third in a tournament featuring 500 of the best players in the nation. This week, Yale and the University of Massachusetts will host tournaments.

Droughn brings home three medals
Valexsia Droughn of Ventura captured three medals in the USA Youth National Championships in Benedictine, Ill. Droughn was on the winning 400-meter relay team (47.39 seconds). She was second in the 200 (24.81). Florida's Robin Reynolds was the winner in 24.33. Droughn, a freshman-to-be at Rio Mesa High, was third in the 100 in 12.0. The winning time was 11.98 and second was 11.99.
Droughn, a standout from the Oxnard Stars Youth Track Club, was competing in her first national competition. This weekend, she will compete in the California State Games in Vista.
VOLLEYBALL
Channel Islands places 70th in Reno Festival
The Channel Islands Volleyball Club 14-2 team competed in the Volleyball Festival in Reno, Nev. Channel Islands started out seeded 118th out of 147 teams and finished the tournament in 70th place.
The improvement of 48 spots was one of the best advancements in the 14s division. Teams from the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada competed in this annual event.
The Channel Islands team members are Presley Colville, Vanessa Flores, Kelsey Hammond, Hannah Harrison, Haylee Harrison, Kaitlin Maxwell, Emily Percak, Carissa Raines, Kelli Russell, Jasmine Sagisi, Ashley Smith and Stephanie Soprano. Chip Tarleton is the coach and Blayke Harrison is the assistant coach.
Ventura College camp: Mandy Rodriguez, the Ventura College women's coach and the Channel Islands 16-1 club coach, will lead a camp for boys and girls July 23-26 in the Athletic Event Center. Ages 10-16 are welcome. Camp hours are 9 a.m. to noon for beginner, advanced and intermediate players. Cost is $90 per camper or $80 for two or more campers from the same family. Camarillo girls place
in Hermosa Beach
Camarillo's Shelby Brooks, a Santa Clara High swimming standout, captured the A Division in the Hermosa Beach one-mile Hennessey Paddleboard race.
There were 25 girls in the A Division and Camarillo's Mari Fukutomi finished fifth.
Brooks and Fukutomi are Pleasant Valley Swim teammates and Ventura State Beach Junior Lifeguards. Both are 15 years of age.
In the B and C divisions, there were nearly 50 racers in each division. Jasmine Fukutomi, 12, placed fifth in the B Division and Abby, 12, finished eighth in the half-mile race. The top five racers in each division earn medals at Hennessey.

Conejo Valley United captures Players Cup
The Conejo Valley United White Strikers under-13 girls defeated the CRSC Infinity under-12 team 2-0 in the Players Cup championship game in Orange.
Courtney Reed scored off an assist by Jordon Engel. Paty Meza converted a penalty kick after Lindsey O'Tousa was fouled in the box. Taylor C' deBaca scored three goals in a 5-0 semifinal win over the Stampede Red. Nicki Ghazarian and Kat Chen added goals. Bricela Meza had two assists. Selina Garcia, Engel and O'Tousa provided assists. Reed and Chen scored in the 2-0 win over the Long Beach Strikers.
Nicole Couture and Garcia had assists. Ghazarian and Reed scored goals in a 2-0 win over the Long Beach Strikers.
Goalie Kasey Magallanes and the defense played well.
