Conejo Valley baseball team dedicates summer to Street
STORY TOOLS
More from Preps Roundups
It's been an emotional week for the Conejo Valley Little League East Junior Division all-stars.
Teammate James Street, 13, died from a skateboarding accident on July 4 and Conejo Valley Little League has dedicated the tournament season to their beloved star.
Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park, 2052 Howard Road, Camarillo. The services are in the Chapel on the Hill.
"It's really emotional playing for him," said teammate Dylan Francis.
Francis and Street have been best friends the last two years and played a lot of baseball together.
Conejo Valley pitcher Luke Steagall was on the Conejo Valley West all-star team last season, while Street's East team was a finalist in the 11-12-year-old District 13 Tournament at Thousand Oaks.
Street was an honor roll student at Ojai Valley.
Steagall pitched 5 1/3 innings against Port Hueneme on Tuesday and the championship game was suspended after seven innings with the score tied at 7. The game was scheduled to resume on Wednesday and a deciding game would be necessary if Port Hueneme handed Conejo Valley East its first loss. The tournament champion will play District 63 champion Saticoy at Moorpark in the Section 1 Tournament at Moorpark. It's a best-of-three series.
"All the players contributed," said Steagall. "Everyone hit the ball and did great."
It was a strange scenario. Port Hueneme rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game.
Port Hueneme's heroics came from J.J. Lugan and Miguel Campos with hits. Ryan Price had a two-run double. Francisco Gayton had a double and Tyler Helling drove in a run. Angel Zavala had an RBI.
Earlier, Zavala had a two-run single.
Last week, playing after Street's death, Port Hueneme jumped to a 7-1 advantage and Conejo Valley battled back for an 8-7 win.
Conejo Valley manager Brian Steagall said the community has come together.
"It's all about listening, talking and getting through it," said Steagall.
"It's pretty emotional, but you have to keep going."
The other Conejo Valley East players are Zach DeBruno, Jesse Oliver, Evan Ocello, Tyler Chaney, Peter McAfee, Daniel Delaney, Michael Shaw, Andrew Corbett, Daniel Gober, Tyler King and Spencer Korey.
A memorial fund has been set up for Street and donations may be sent to the James David Street Memorial Fund, care of California Oaks State Bank, P.O. Box 5038, Thousand Oaks, CA., 91359-9873.
