Simi Valley youth to play in prestigious tourney
Eight-year-old Brandon Kewalramani of Simi Valley has qualified for the 2007 U.S. Kids Golf World Championship, which will be played Aug. 2-4 at Pinehurst, N.C.
Kewalramani earned his spot by shooting a 36 for nine holes at a regional qualifying tournament at Brookline Country Club in Pasadena.
The event will feature boys and girls 12 and under, playing a shorter age- and gender-friendly version of the course. Depending on their age, participants play either nine or 18 holes.
More than 50 qualifiers are being held in the United States and in a number of international locations to determine who will compete in the boys' and girls' finals.
Holland gets scholarship: The Buenaventura Senior Men's Golf Club scholarship of $1,000 has been awarded to Maxine Holland. Holland, a 2007 graduate of Hueneme High, will be a freshman at Stanford this fall.
Holland achieved a 4.71 grade-point average during her high school career and scored 1,880 on the SAT. She plans to get her bachelor's degree in economics.
Hole-in-one report: July 7, 2007, was lucky for 71-year-old Errol Pomerantz, who aced the 161-yard sixth hole at Camarillo Springs using a hybrid club.
It was witnessed by Stuart Lickman, Richard Puana and Ben Nemitt.
AJGA event nears: The tournament field for the American Junior Golf Association's Hanmi Bank Junior Open is now set.
The tournament will take place July 16-19 at Robinson Ranch Golf Club's Valley Course in Santa Clarita. It will feature 99 boys and girls ages 12-18 from 10 states.
Seventy-two players in the field hail from California and several Ventura County golfers are in the mix.
Among the local juniors taking part are: Adam Carter, St. Bonaventure High; Brent Duclos, Moorpark; Danielle Kang, Oak Park; Alex Kang, Oak Park; Robin Lee Camarillo; Jason Rosenkranz, Westlake; and Cole Seeger, Westlake.
AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel.
Women golfers sought: The Los Robles Greens Women's Golf Club is seeking new members. The group plays Tuesday mornings at Los Robles Greens Golf Course.
The annual cost of club membership is $100 and includes membership in the Women's Public Links Golf Association of Southern California that affords its members the opportunity to play monthly tournaments throughout Southern California.
