Rio School District to receive $450,000 grant

Support services to be improved

The Rio School District will receive $450,000 to improve support services for students and their families, state officials announced Tuesday.

Rio is one of 23 school districts in California that will share $10 million in Healthy Start grants, which provide services such as healthcare, dental care, mental health counseling, child welfare services, employment services, crime prevention and child care.

Healthy Start doesn't necessarily pay for the services, but sets up a system to make sure families and students have access to the support they need.

Less than 25 percent of the 2007 applicants received grants this year because of limited funding. Requests were granted based on a competitive process, and state officials said those selected demonstrated the most effective strategies to ensure students and families get the access they need.

With those services in place, schools expect to see attendance and behavior improve, test scores increase and drug use and school violence decrease.

More information on Healthy Start is available at http://www.cde.ca.gov/fg/fo/r8/healthystart06result.asp.
