Diver missing off island is a man from Glen Ellen
The Coast Guard on Tuesday afternoon identified a diver missing off Santa Cruz Island as Stewart Hindley, 54, of Glen Ellen.
Hindley went missing Tuesday morning while diving off the southeast coast of the island.
The island is part of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and is about 25 miles from Santa Barbara.
The Coast Guard was notified by the Santa Barbara-based dive vessel Vision at 9:49 a.m. that Hindley was missing.
Several divers, two rescue boats from Coast Guard Station Channel Islands Harbor and a Coast Guard helicopter from Los Angeles were sent to search for the diver.
A 21-square-nautical-mile area was searched. The Coast Guard and the National Park Service were conducting a surface search, with Los Angeles County lifeguard rescue divers searching underwater.
Searchers hadn't found Hindley as of Tuesday evening, and Lt. Yancee McLemore said the search would continue through the night.
