Harbor District approves contract to install promenade, repair rock slope

Construction will start in August on a massive repair to the Port Hueneme coastline that promises environmental protection and a boost for tourism.

The Oxnard Harbor District unanimously approved the $4.1 million project. The contract was awarded to Granite Construction Co., which should complete the work by year's end, Anthony Taormina, the district's executive director, said Tuesday.

Crews will repair the rock wall that runs along the coast about 3,000 feet from the Port Hueneme lighthouse eastward to Surfside Drive, Taormina said. This will protect the seawall from erosion caused by tidal action and large waves.

The project also calls for building a promenade along the route with landmark dedications to the Chumash Indians and a former Naval engineering laboratory.

"It's definitely a quality-of-life issue and a tourist attraction," Port Hueneme City Council Murray Rosenbluth said Tuesday, noting the project will improve access to the lighthouse.

The harbor district will pick up 82.2 percent of the cost with the city paying the remainder. The City Council is expected to approve its share of the tab, about $800,000, in August, City Manager David Norman said Tuesday.
