Body found at Emma Wood identified
Authorities today identified a woman whose body was found this weekend at Emma Wood State Beach in Ventura.
Janice Cordero, 59, died of natural causes, said Shasta Gainer, a forensic pathology technician for the Ventura County Medical Examiner's office.
Cordero was homeless, Gainer said.
Cordero's body was found in a patch of poison oak about 5 p.m. Sunday by a park aide who was walking near the beach's group camp with his daughters.
The remains were skeletal and it appeared that they had been there for several weeks, officials said.

Janice Codero was born Janice Ruth Johnson on Dec 08, 1947 to Robert Kidder Johnson (1913-2005) and Eleanor Marie Caryl (1920-1995) in Los Angeles Co, CA. She married a David Cordero, of Nebraska and had two sons, David Jr. and Carl. In anyone in the Ventura County can provide any information that could help locate any of these relatives it would be appreciated.
I am married to Janice’s half sister and am the family genealogist, but have been unable to locate Janice or any ofher immediate kin. John J Sellman - 843-761-5628

The woman found on Emma Wood Beach on Sunday, July 8, 2007, was our mother, Janice Ruth Cordaro. Despite our repeated best efforts, Mother never found a place she would agree to call home permanently. Prior to her living on the streets she had been the respected wife of a Pastor, a gifted pianist and vocalist, a dedicated Christian, a cherished daughter and sister, and a loving and devoted mother.
Assistant Medical Examiner, Dr. Janice Frank, made the indescribable shock of be informed that our mother’s remains had been found on a beach much easier to cope with due to her compassion, care, and professionalism. Dr. Frank didn't treat the remains on her exam table as simply the bones of some transient. She knew that this female human being was someone's daughter, sister, mother, aunt, and/or wife. Although we were unable to view Mother’s body, Dr Frank allowed us to get close enough to Mother to say "Goodbye."
Sergeant Bill Ayub of the Sheriff's Office drove us to the place where our mother's body was found. Being at that spot was very painful, but we could feel our mother's presence there. We thank Sergeant Ayub for also helping us find closure.
Mr. Ray Arbuckle of Coast Cities Cremations was very compassionate throughout the process of making our mother’s final arrangements. My brother and I were not prepared for such large expenses. However, Mr. Arbuckle provided us with the services we needed at a reasonable price, and even gave us prayer cards at no charge. His dedication eased our pain.
Ms. Michelle Rein of Passion Flowers is also to be commended for her generosity. I stopped in her shop to buy a length of ribbon to include in our makeshift memorial. When I told Ms. Rein who our mother had been she took our discount store wreath and decorated it with a beautiful purple ribbon with the word "Mother" written on it and gave it to us at no charge. My brother and I proudly placed that beautiful wreath in memory of our beloved mother.
Finally, we would like to thank those who discovered our mother's remains. In Christ's parable about the Good Samaritan, many people passed by a man in need because they couldn't be bothered, delayed, or get their hands dirty. This person could have done the same to our mother. Because of his or her invovlement we are able to give our mother a proper and dignified Christian burial.
This unknown person, Dr. Frank, Sergeant Ayub, Mr. Arbuckle, and Ms. Rein are all "Good Samaritans” and we are so grateful.
In life we were never able to provide Mother with the help she so desperately needed. And so, God, in His great mercy, took her into His loving arms. For that we are grateful, but we shall always miss her deeply.
