Diver missing near Santa Cruz Island

The United States Coast Guard this afternoon identified a missing diver off Santa Cruz Island as Stewart Hindley, 54, of Glen Ellen.

Hindley went missing this morning while diving off the southeast coast of the island.

The island is part of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and is about 25 miles from Santa Barbara.

The Coast Guard was notified at 9:49 a.m. that Hindley was missing.

Rescue boats were sent as was a Coast Guard helicopter.

A 21-square-nautical-mile area was searched.

But searchers had yet to find Hindley as of Tuesday evening.

The Coast Guard said the search would continue through the night.
