Moorpark baseball team seeks District 13 crown

The Moorpark Little League 11-12-year-old all-stars advanced to Wednesday's 5:30 p.m. championship game after defeating Thousand Oaks American 6-2 on Saturday in the District 13 Tournament at Moorpark.

Moorpark's Kameron Pollock collected three hits and pitched six innings, scattering seven hits with strikeouts.

Austin Cole had two hits and Tony Herrera had a double and a single.

Moorpark has won the District 13 and Section 1 championship the past two years.

"These kids practice very hard," said Gordon Mazur, assistant coach. "They're a great group and dedicated to the sport."

Last summer, Moorpark was the Section 1 finalist in the 11-year-old tournament at Lompoc.

For Thousand Oaks, Kevin Bacarella hit a solo homer in the third inning. Elliott Keene had two hits, scored a run and was the losing pitcher. Chandler Whitbord pitched the fifth and sixth inning.

Thousand Oaks falls into an elimination game on Tuesday. Northside and Sunset are in the elimination bracket.

The District 13 champion advances to the Section 1 Tournament starting this weekend in Nipomo. The eight section champions play in the Southern California State Tournament at La Mirada July 21-29. The Southern California champion plays in the West Region Tournament at San Bernardino. The Little League World Series will be played in South Williamsport, Pa., Aug. 17-26. District 63 update: Santa Paula was 4-0 in 11-12-year-old Pool B play at Dos Pueblos. Fillmore was 2-2, but edged Ojai Valley 2-2. Ojai Valley was also 2-2.

In Pool A at Goleta Valley. Montalvo was 4-0 and defending champion Goleta Valley was 3-1, Saticoy was 2-2. The teams are playing in a double-elimination championship bracket. Montalvo defeated Fillmore 14-2 and Santa Paula edged Goleta Valley 3-2. Goleta Valley will host a game today at 5 p.m. The championship game will be Wednesday at 5 p.m., and if a deciding game is needed, it will be played Thursday at 5 p.m. All age-group division results and schedules are on the Web site: http://www.d63umps.org.

SIMI YOUTH WIN

North Region PONY District Tourney

Highlights: Simi Youth — The 14-year-old Simi Youth Baseball League all-stars opened the tournament at North Valley with a 17-0 rout of Hart. Tyler Abbott had three hits, including a double and three RBIs. Nolan Reed had three hits and two RBIs. Jake Woolley had two hits and two stolen bases. Joe Deflavio had a double and an RBI. Corey Lavallee had a double. Rocky Morales had a hit and two RBIs. Jason Franklin had a single and an RBI. Jacob Franklin had a hit. Ryan Knight had a hit and an RBI. Levi Shordon had a double, three RBIs and two stolen bases. Jake Conlin had a hit and two RBIs. Scott Hockenberry had a hit, an RBI and three runs scored. Chad Avena had four walks and four stolen bases. Shordon allowed only two hits. Hockenberry, Avena and Conlin combined for five strikeouts and allowed no hits in relief. Shordon was the winning pitcher. Abbott had two doubles and drove in three runs as Simi defeated Mid Valley 5-1 in Game 2. Abbott was the starting pitcher, with no hits and five strikeouts in two innings. Avena scattered six hits with three strikeouts in four innings of relief. Hockenberry pitched the final inning with two strikeouts and no hits. Simi defeated Sylmar 6-2 to advance to the semifinal round. However, La Quinta forfeited and Simi will play in Tuesday's championship game against Camarillo or Sylmar from the other semifinal game. Shordon pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts over five innings against Sylmar. Hockenberry was the closer, allowing no hits and recording two strikeouts. Hockenberry had two doubles and drove in three runs. Abbott had a double, an RBI and stole two bases. Avena had a single, an RBI squeeze bunt and a stolen base. District 13 Junior Division

at Moorpark

Highlights: Conejo Valley — The 13-14-year-old all-stars rallied from a 7-1 deficit playing in memory of teammate James Street, who passed away on July 4. Down 7-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Zach DeBruno singled, Jesse Oliver walked and Dylan Francis had a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Evan Ocello had an RBI single and Tyler Chaney fllowed with the game tying hit, Peter McAfee walked to load the bases. On a two-ball, two-strike count, Daniel Delaney was hit by a pitch to bring in the game-winning run on July 5. McAfee was the starting pitcher and Port Hueneme scored five runs in the first two innings. Conejo Valley committed four errors and the team came out flat. Michael Shaw pitched five innings and didn't allow an earned run. In the sixth inning, Francis walked and Lucas Stegal came in as a pinch runner. Ocello walked and Delaney had a two-run double. Andrew Corbett had an RBI double and Shaw added an RBI hit as Conejo Valley trailed 7-5 after six innings. Daniel Gober played well on defense as did Tyler King at second base after replacing injured Spencer Korey. Conejo Valley East will play in today's 5 p.m. championship game.

SUNSET 6, MOORPARK 2

District 13 Junior Division at Moorpark

Highlights: Sunset — Marcus Lopez had three hits, including a two-run homer in the first inning and four RBIs. Brennan Groeneveld, Gary Cabral and Robert Bustamante each had two hits. Robert Montelongo pitched five innings, allowing a run and was the winning pitcher. Northside went on to eliminate Sunset. Conejo Valley East is unbeaten in the tournament and Port Hueneme and Northside are in the elimination bracket.

EL RIO 4, MOORPARK 3 (11 INN.)

District 13 Senior Division

at Amgen Field

Highlights: El Rio — Manager Frank Tinoco's all-stars won the championship game to advance to the Section 1 Tournament starting Sunday at Amgen Field in Thousand Oaks. Eroq Barraza was the winning pitcher and Eric Lopez singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning. Gabe Herrera also pitched well for El Rio. Moorpark — Evan Traffenstedt and Elon Goldman pitched well, but defensive lapses prevented Moorpark from winning the championship. Andrew Carter had a double and scored the game-tying run.

MOORPARK WINS

District 13 11-year-old tournament

Highlights: Moorpark — The all-stars defeated Thousand Oaks American for their second victory. Chase Fredrick, Bradley Fullerton, Trevor Weston, Troy Conway, Michael Picchini, Jake Shelly, Charlie McQuinn, Kevin Victoria, Devin Pope, Justin Parr, David Frank, Greg Gilbert and Ryan Swanson sparked the win. Moorpark opened the tournament with a 10-5 win over El Rio. Moorpark plays in today's 5:30 p.m. championship game. Thousand Oaks American and El Rio are in the elimination bracket.

SUNSET 8,

THOUSAND OAKS AMERICAN 5

District 13 9-10-year-old tournament

Highlights: Sunset — Alec Soto had three hits to lead the Minor Division all-stars at Port Hueneme. Robert Yepez added a two-run homer and York Hernandez contributed two hits. David Reveles pitched five innings and was aided by a strong defense. Sunset and Conejo Valley East are in the elimination bracket. Moorpark is unbeaten and will play in Wednesday's championship game at 5:30 p.m. Moorpark defeated Port Hueneme 16-0 on Saturday. Hueneme plays today at 5:30 p.m.

Why don't they write about the girls softball? All they have is the high school level. What about the younger girls? The girls going to San Diego to the state tourny. Seaside and El Rio are going where is the write up about that?

In the 9-10 year old tournament at Port Hueneme:

Sunset played Conejo Valley WEST (not east) on Monday and beat them 12-10. They play Port Hueneme tonight with the winner advancing to the championship round with Moorpark tomorrow and Thu if necessary.

As far as not getting writeups, do you send press releases to the newspaper? That is how they get the information for printing. I send daily press-releases to RRomine@venturacountystar.com
