Editorial: 7 county wonders

A list of the "new seven wonders of the world," chosen in a global online poll, was released over the weekend amid much fanfare.

Organizers, who launched the effort in 1999, said 100 million votes were cast via the Internet and cell-phone text messages. The list was whittled down to 21 in 2006 and, finally, the top seven were named on the seventh day of the seventh month in the year '07. They are:

The Great Wall of China; the Colosseum in Rome; India's Taj Mahal; Machu Picchu in Peru; Christ Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro; the Chichén Itzá pyramid in Mexico; and the city of Petra in Jordan.

The Star really has no quarrel with any of the sites, well, except perhaps, Britain's Stonehenge being left off the final list. And, what about America's own Statue of Liberty?

However, not everyone was so accepting. Some found fault with using a popular vote over scientific methods to choose the new wonders. Others criticized the poll, saying those without Internet access were shut out of the voting.

All this hoopla and public involvement got us thinking about the man-made wonders that exist right here in Ventura County. What seven would our readers list? So, here's your chance to weigh in.

Just e-mail us with your choice and a short explanation as to what makes it worthy to be in the top seven. (For those without Internet access, just send us a letter.) We'll reveal the unofficial "seven man-made wonders of Ventura County" on these pages.

We look forward to hearing from readers.
