Bryans fall to French duo in final
Camarillo's Bob and Mike Bryan question a call with umpire Lars Graff as they play Michael Llodra and Arnaud Clement of France in the doubles final at Wimbledon on Sunday. The Bryans lost 7-6 (5), 3-6, 4-6, 4-6.
WIMBLEDON, England — Camarillo's Bob and Mike Bryans were not the ones celebrating this year, after failing to defend their doubles title at Wimbledon on Sunday.
Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra had plenty to celebrate after upsetting the top-seeded twins, 6-7 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. In fact, the French teammates may have went a little too far in the aftermath of their victory.
The duo threw their rackets and shirts into the crowd.
Llodra neglected to keep a spare shirt and had to borrow one from Clement's brother before collecting his trophy.
And that may not even be the worst of it.
"I have to play next week at a tournament in Newport (R.I.)," Llodra said. "I have no more rackets now. I don't know what I am doing."
The No. 10 seeds, who were within a point of losing to Amer Delic and Bobby Reynolds in a three-day second-round match, hit a series of winning volleys and passing shots to clinch their first doubles title together.
But did Llodra consider collecting his trophy shirtless?
"Probably if it was in Roland Garros," he said, referring to the French Open. "But in England, you know, it's not my hometown."
The Bryans, who have won five grand slam doubles titles, were the victims of a controversial call in the fourth set when chair umpire Lars Graff ruled Bob Bryan hit the net-tape with his racket following a reflex volley. TV replays showed he didn't but the decision cost the brothers the point, game and break.
