Locals urged to cut water use, mandatory measures may be next

On top of the sweltering summer weather, water officials suggest area residents and businesses cut back on water use due to the record dry year.

In areas dependent on local rainfall, water officials predict that mandatory measures to conserve could be enforced by the end of the summer.

"If we're not careful, the amount of water could deplete rapidly," Wickstrum said. "Lifestyles may change, agriculture may change. If we don't take care of it soon enough, we could end up with serious episodes of water shortages."

In areas like the Ojai Valley, where a drought was declared on May 9, this year has been the driest year on record since 1923, Bryant said.

In Las Vegas municipalities paid home and business owners to tear out their lawns to save water. As a resdient of Ojai I am apalled at all of the runoff from motels and other businesses and homes who are watering their lawns and plants. It's like they don't care or are just clueless. The city needs to drive around and warn, then subsequently cite these flagrant water wasters. Although I have a front and backyard, I use almost no water outdoors to irrigate. Yet, if I try to quickly wash my car I get all kinds of looks from people who waste water everytime they irrigate, read: everyday.
