Lambo, Rau, Bywater make state's first team
Three Ventura County high school standouts who epitomized excellence on the field have been selected as first-team members of the Cal-HiSports.com all-state baseball team.
Andrew Lambo of Newbury Park, Garrett Rau of Camarillo and Matt Bywater of Thousand Oaks were honored after stellar senior seasons. Five more area players, including Marmonte League MVP Alex Kurland of Calabasas and Tri-Valley League Player of the Year Casey Serna of St. Bonaventure, also earned spots on the all-state squad.
Lambo, the two-time county Player of the Year and The Star's Player of the Year for the second straight season, excelled at first base and as a pitcher.
The left-hander batted .453 with nine home runs, 30 RBIs and 36 runs scored. He finished 8-2 on the mound with a 1.61 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 68 2/3 innings.
He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers after the National League club selected him in the fourth round of the major league baseball amateur draft last month.
Rau led his team to the championship game of the CIF-SS Division II playoffs with his performance as a shortstop/pitcher.
He batted .520 with 51 hits and 36 RBIs. On the mound, he was 9-1 with a 1.65 ERA.
In the Division II title game against Vista Murrieta, Rau pitched 10 innings and allowed no runs and two hits. Camarillo lost in 11 innings, 1-0.
Bywater, the Marmonte League's Pitcher of the Year, was a perfect 12-0 with a 1.12 ERA. He has signed with Pepperdine.
Kurland, a senior catcher who has signed with USC, is a second-team selection. He batted .480 in league and .440 overall with four homers, four triples and 12 doubles.
Serna, a junior, marks the fourth straight year that a St. Bonaventure player has made the all-state medium schools team. The shortstop pitcher batted .450 with 39 hits, 37 runs scores and 29 RBIs. He was 8-1 as a pitcher with an ERA of 2.06.
Jacob Mahan, a junior infielder from Camarillo, was named to the all-state underclass first team. Michael Vinyard, a junior second baseman from Royal, and Brett Hale, a junior outfielder from Simi Valley, made the underclass second team.
Mahan hit .486 with 51 hits and a team-best 38 RBIs. Vinyard hit .440 with 37 hits, while Hale ended up with a .400 batting average with 34 hits.
