Sinkhole only fixed temporarily on Highway 23
Caltrans planned to close part of Highway 23 between Moorpark and Fillmore from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. today as workers repair a sinkhole that appeared Thursday.
Traffic in both directions will be diverted around Highway 23 near Happy Camp Road, said Caltrans spokeswoman Jeanne Bonfilio. She could not give the exact route of the detour, saying only that it will be clearly marked with signs.
A northbound lane along that stretch of Highway 23 was closed for more than six hours Thursday because of the sinkhole, the California Highway Patrol reported. The road was reopened about 7:30 p.m. after temporary repairs.
Bonfilio could not say what caused the sinkhole, which was reported around 1 p.m. Thursday.
When authorities arrived, they discovered the hole was 3-feet wide at the opening, 6-feet wide at the base and was caving in. No vehicle damage or injuries were reported.
