Web site to offer tips for greener communities
Ventura County launched a Web site today aimed at helping people build environment-friendly homes, buildings and even entire towns.
The "Build it Smart" site — http://www.builditsmartvc.org — features homes and offices around the county that have embraced "green-building" techniques that save on energy costs and are easy on the environment.
One section, "Dave's Picks," outlines several energy-saving suggestions from local conservation expert David Inger.
Another explores smart planning of cities to avoid urban sprawl and car pollution.
Green building has become increasingly popular in recent years as the cost of energy has risen and the price of environmentally sound products has decreased.
In addition to the Web site, packets of information on green building will be handed out at local planning departments, said Lorraine Rubin, a grants administrator for the county who helped build the site.
