Hungry Hunter closes in T.O.
Patrons of Hungry Hunter in Thousand Oaks might be surprised to find out that the restaurant closed this week without warning.
The only notification is a sign on the door thanking them for their business throughout the years.
The family restaurant, known for its prime ribs, seafood and steaks, permanently closed July 2, according to a voice recording on the restaurant's phone. Hungry Hunter is at 487 N. Moorpark Road near the Janss Marketplace.
Bill Franks, general manager of Hungry Hunter in Ventura, said the main reason the restaurant closed is because the lease was up and the landlord had other interested parties that were looking at the property.

i just hope that the employees got a little bit more warning than that so they could start looking for new jobs.

Hey bianchimedic,
You obviously have no inkling of the history of the Hungry Hunter in Thousand Oaks. It was one of the first "real" restaurants in the area. I'm sure many people have memories of going there with families and friends. Some day you'll grow up and feel the same way about the places you go to now.

I am glad that the newspaper shared the news. I would have hated to just show up expecting a tasty meal and the place was gone!
I will miss the Hungry Hunter. It was the first restaurant we visited when we moved to Thousand Oaks in 1977. Lots of great memories there!

Speaking of closure, what happened to "El Torito" in Ventura at the "101 and "Seaward" exit?

The ElTorito off Seaward? It was open on Father's Day. Has something happened since?

It's about time they closed their doors. They had rude employees, cold food, and crappy attitudes to say the least. I am happy to know that other patrons won't get bad food and awful service like I experienced one too many times. And, the excuse about the lease being up...you mean to tell me they are that clueless and did not have the courtesy to give their customers advance notice of the shutdown? Real customer appreciate there! (HA) I think I will check out the Ventura County Health Inspection Report and see what's the real deal as to why they no longer will serve a meal.

I'm with Allison on this one. It certainly sounds like there was more to it then a lease expiring. I really hope that they gave their staff some advance notice and shame, shame, shame on them if they didn't.
The 1st time I went to Hungry Hunter about 10 yrs ago it was ok and was the only decent steak place in town. However, that changed over the years and the past few times I went the food was awful, the service was awful, the place was dirty and the prices were way out of line for what was being served. I vowed never to go again after my last visit 2 years ago so I'm not disappointed to see them go. Hopefully something new and exciting will go in its place.

First off, Hungry Hunter has been rumoring to close down for years as management, the building, lack of customers, service and the food has been an issue for the past 6 years. Secondly, the Star printed an article on El Torito closing as an Extended Stay (a hotel chain) has bought the property. Visit the El Torito in Oxnard if you miss it as the food and service is much better than Ventura.

Interesting . . . I was on an email list for Hungry Hunter. Just 3 or 4 weeks ago I received news of an offer of $60 gift cards for $40. I was tempted to go buy a few to save for Christmas and birthday gifts, but didn't have the time. They made this offer when they had to have known they were closing. Now the nearest one is in Ventura. If I had bought those gift cards, I would have been really angry. That's a nasty thing to do.

Wow.....interesting to read the comments. I heard through the grape vine that the TO HH was closing. I worked there about 27 years ago and it was amazing..the employees were like a family and we had all kinds of customers from the locals to the rich and famous and the good ole Dallas Cowboys during training camp...(full prime ribs on the table.) It was one of the best times of my life...the people and yes even the food I miss...the onion soup was the best..I recentally heard that since the closing was announced that a lot of old employees etc are driving by and putting messages on the building. Wish I could be there too but I live Vegas now...funny how timing is because I am headed that way in August, I will have to pay my respects!
