Basketball players hone skills at Pacifica's Powerhouse camp

The Powerhouse Basketball Camp at Pacifica High this week catered to a wide variety of players from 6 to 14 years of age.

The 45 players started the week honing their dribbling, passing and free throw skills, to list a few and on Friday, the campers will have one last chance to better their scores.

Howard Davis, the Moorpark College athletic director, started the Powerhouse Camps in 2003 when he was the varsity boys' basketball coach.

Over the years, the Pacifica coaching staff has seen the younger players mature.

"We've seen players with little experience grow up," said Abel Morales, the second-year varsity coach.

Nearly 800 boys and girls have participated in the camps, emphasing fun while improving player's skills.

Last summer, one season broke a camp record when 141 players participated.

A camp photo, player evaluation and daily awards are some of the highlights.

Jeff Pike, Bobby Tenorio and Isaac Martinez assistant boys' coaches, run the camp along with recent graduates Cameron Carrizales and Raynard Pamilton.

Returning Pacifica players Annie Davis (senior), Brena Van Sommeren (senior), Justin Jimenez (senior), Steven Garcia (senior) and Derick Becerra were among the camp counselors. Melisa Esquivel runs the snack bar and handles the lunches.

There's one final camp starting July at Pacifica.

Bearcats unbeaten: The Bearcats are off and running in the Ventura Wildcat League with a 5-0 record. The Bearcats are averaging 25.4 points and allow 17.6. The Tigers (3-2) and Bengals (3-2) are tied for second place. The Jaguars () and Leopards () are tied four fourth. The Lions (2-4) and Panthers (1-4) round out the standings, The Tigers are avering 24 points and allowing 18.8.

Jessica Judd of the Bearcats is leading the league in scoring at 10.8.

In weekend action, the Lions earned a 37-21 win over Panthers. Sabrina Lee scored 18 points to lead the Lions to the highest scoring point total this summer.

Natalie McCambridge paced the Panthers with nine points. Aubri Smith of the Lions added nine points.

Judd scored 17 points as the Bearcats defeated the Jaguars 31-15. Hailey Medina added eight points for the Bearcats, Dana Beuttler of the Jaguars scored seven points.

Jessi Smith and Linnea Lindberg each scored 10 points to lift the Tigers to a 26-12 win over the Bengals. Casey Collet led the Bengals with four points.

Heat Tournament: The Heat Basketball Club will offer a Pre-Labor Day Tournament for boys' and girls' teams. Entry fee is $300 with a three-game guarantee. Games will be played in Ventura and Oxnard gyms. Girls' divisions will be sixth grade and lower, 7/8B, 7/8A, JV and varsity. Boys' divisions will be grades 6, 7, 8, JV and varsity. Players needed: Coach Charlie Feyh is seeking girls in third and fourth grade to play summer games with the Ventura Nets. Feyh at 654-0743. James White, coach of the Heat girls' club team, is seeking players who will graduate in 2008, 2009 or 2010.
