Fillmore Mayor Pro Tem Cecilia Cuevas was honored with the Woman of Confidence Award at the second annual National Women's Confidence Day reception hosted by the YWCA of Greater Los Angeles.

Cuevas is serving as mayor pro tem in her second elected term in the city. She serves as vice president of the board of directors of the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault. In addition, she provides financial advising services for Merrill Lynch clients.

Cuevas said that because women are leading the nation in new business development and wealth management, it is important for them to know how to manage their finances so they can take part in the movement.

"My work is inspired by the desire to help women achieve financial success and confidence through sound and thoughtful financial planning," Cuevas said. "When women choose to take action to plan their financial outlook, confidence is both developed and achieved."

The event also launched the Project Confidence Education Program created by the YWCA and Curvation brand, a line of intimates and apparel. The multifaceted nationwide women's confidence-building curriculum is designed to build and sustain a woman's confidence in areas from style and health to career and personal finance. A group of 25 women age 25-49 will be chosen to participate in the monthly workshops beginning this month through February.

"I believe that through continued education, whether formal or informal, women become confident in their abilities to make strategic decisions about their future," Cuevas said.

The mission of the YWCA of Greater Los Angeles is to create opportunities for women's growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision: peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people. For information, visit http://www.ywcagla.org.
