King Gillette Ranch opens in Calabasas
After three decades of work, the King Gillette Ranch in Calabasas has opened as a public park.
The 588-acre park cost $35 million to acquire after 11 different public and private groups worked together to secure funding. Soka University had been occupying the land in recent years but vacated the property last week.
The park, which opened Saturday, has a large Spanish Colonial mansion, bridges that span rivers and lakes, and acres of unspoiled land. The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority will operate the park in conjunction with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, California State Parks and the National Park Service. In the coming years, the NPS and the State Parks will be headquartered there.
A dedication ceremony is planned for the fall.
The park, at 26800 W. Mulholland Highway, is open from 8 a.m. to sunset. Parking is $5 a day. Dogs are not allowed.
