MLB notes: Angels place Napoli, Aybar on DL

Angels place Napoli, Aybar on DL

The Los Angeles Angels placed catcher Mike Napoli and infielder Erick Aybar on the 15-day disabled list, and optioned outfielder Nick Gorneault to Triple-A Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League.

To replace them on their 25-man roster, the AL West-leading Angels recalled catcher Jeff Mathis from Salt Lake and activated outfielder Garret Anderson and infielder Maicer Izturis from the disabled list.

Napoli sprained his left ankle on the final play of Sunday's 4-3 victory over Baltimore. He is hitting .243 with eight homers and 29 RBIs in 56 games.

Aybar bruised his right hand in the third inning of Sunday's game at Baltimore. He is hitting .236 with 15 RBIs in 61 games.

Gorneault was hitless in four at-bats with a run scored in two games with the Angels. He was recalled last Friday when the Angels designated Shea Hillenbrand for assignment.

Anderson has been on the disabled list since June 7 with a strained right hip flexor. He is hitting .264 with three homers and 15 RBIs in 34 games with the Angels.

Izturis hasn't played since April 30 because of a tight right hamstring. He is hitting .245 with one homer and 14 RBIs in 29 games with the Angels.

A's Duchscherer will have season-ending surgery: Oakland right-hander Justin Duchscherer will undergo season-ending surgery on his injured right hip, the latest bad injury news to hit the Athletics' bullpen this season.

Duchscherer, an All-Star in 2005, had been sidelined since May 15 with soreness in his arthritic right hip that didn't get better with rest and rehabilitation. Duchscherer was called back from a minor league rehab assignment in late May when the injury flared up again and called off a throwing session Sunday in New York.

Mets place Perez on DL: Left-hander Oliver Perez was put on the 15-day disabled list by the New York Mets, a move retroactive to June 27.

Perez is 7-6 with a 3.14 ERA in 15 starts for the Mets, who recalled left-hander Jason Vargas from Triple-A New Orleans to take Perez's roster spot. Vargas is to start against the Colorado Rockies tonight.

Vargas was 6-5 with a 4.35 ERA in 13 starts at New Orleans, where he struck out 56 and walked 23 in 72 1/3 innings.

Cardinals send Reyes to minors: Anthony Reyes, who has lost 12 straight regular-season decisions, was optioned to the minors by the St. Louis Cardinals to make room for Braden Looper in the rotation.

Reyes' losing streak matched Bill Kissinger's franchise record set from 1896 to 1897. The right-hander, who dominated the Detroit Tigers in winning the World Series opener last fall, has a 6.40 ERA.

The Cardinals have totaled 29 runs in his 12 starts this year, and only 14 while he was on the mound.
