Morning Report: Two injured in Fillmore shooting

Police and Fire: Two Fillmore residents who were shot Monday night in an apparently gang related incident are in stable condition this morning, authorities said.

The shooting occurred about 9 p.m. after two groups of people got into a verbal confrontation in the parking lot of La Plaza Market at Highway 126 and C Street in Fillmore, Sheriff's officials said in a statement.

During the confrontation, someone started shooting and two people were struck by bullets.

A 25-year-old man was shot in the chest and a 17-year-old boy was hit in the hip, officials said.

Sheriff's deputies discovered the victims in a car they spotted leaving the scene on Highway 126 westbound.

Deputies weren't sure at first if the people in the car were victims or suspects, said Capt. Tim Hagel.

When the car refused to stop, deputies followed it to Santa Paula Hospital. Once there, they determined the occupants were shooting victims, Hagel said.

The victims were stabilized at the hospital and the 25-year-old man was later transferred to the Ventura County Medical Center.

Both victims are expected to recover, Hagel said.

Investigators from the Fillmore Police Department, the Sheriff's Gang Unit and the Sheriff's Major Crimes Unit began looking into the incident Monday night.

They had not identified any suspects as of this morning, Hagel said.

Traffic: At 6:47 a.m., ambulances were responding to a traffic collision on Highway 126 westbound at Wells Road in Ventura, the Ventura County Fire Department reported.

At 6:51 a.m., the California Highway Patrol was warning motorists to watch out for a baby carriage in the number one lane of Highway 101 southbound just north of Highway 126 in Ventura.

Weather: Temperatures between 94 and 104 are expected in coastal and inland valleys on this sunny day, the National Weather Service reported. Forecasts show temperatures in the 80s near the coast and in the mid 70s at beaches.

A red flag warning of high fire danger in Ventura County mountains remains in effect until Thursday at 6 p.m.

Check this link to an article that appeared briefly yesterday. No comments other than mine. It quickly faded to a rear page so it could not be seen.

The gangsters are already out in force this summer. they are tagging neighborhoods, schools and businesses, fights are breaking out, shootings are routine and our parks and beaches are no longer safe. As long as these animals are allowed to walk our streets, we will be at risk from the random acts of violence that occur from no more than the wrong answer to "Where are you from?" Sick!!!

If there are any men remaining in their "communities," lets see them stop the excuses and eliminate the gangs. Risk? Of course. However, the alternative is to life forever in fear. From what I'm seeing, I'm concerned that we'll see prejudice in our county as we've never seen it before.

At one point in my life I wanted to return to Fillmore and raise children there, but after reading about shooting incidents like this, Fillmore is now a distant memory.

Unfortunately it's all over SoCal...and other places. It's not just Fillmore, or Santa Paula, or Oxnard anymore. The cancer of gang activity has riddled this state and is infecting others, and is making this part of the country virtually unliveable. As soon as I can retire, I am SO outta here. Good job, ghetto dwellers. You can have it.

There is no place in the United States that is free from the influence of gangs. This is due to migratory patterns.

We were going to move, but after checking out homes in various locals, determined that we'd best stick it out. Thank God we moved to a home with CC&R's and an HOA.

For sure, City Manager Rick Cole must be fired and most of the city council turned over. The so-called low cost housing that they are pushing is largely exclusionary (excludes some ethnic groups in favor of others). By being exclusionary it becomes the seed for ghetto formation.

What about the Fathers? Strong male influences are a must if you want to raise confident kids. There are too many children growing up in one parent households. It's time for both parents to grow-up and take responsibility for their children.

Thanks wideopenweb. I've been to NC during the summer and yeah, it gets a little sticky, but you know what's the best part? You can walk around ANYWHERE at any time of the day or night and nobody botheres you. You can spend the days by the lake or whatever you like to do and eveyything is just so quiet and peaceful. You never hear of any crazy ass kids shooting at each other like you do here.
And sometimes its not the parents fault, the mother or the father. You dont have 100% control of what your kids do. I try to be the best parent and teach my son all the morals, I never curse around him, and sometimes he gets out of line. It's not me or his dad, it's the stupid kids around him that make him believe it's ok to act that way. It's ok though, a slap or two and he's good again...

Most of these gang-bangers have no fathers. That's why their mothers have no control over them. I wouldn't be surprised if these gangsters are the offspring of gangsters. That's all they know --- violence! They don't know how to live in a "normal" world. Send them to Iraq - let's see how tough they are. They are cowards!!!

A child can come from the best family in the world and still choose to become involved in gangs. And unless you are speaking from experience of being an offspring of a gangbanger, don't assume.
