Morning Report: Kitchen fire damages Oxnard home

Police and Fire: An accidental fire in an Oxnard home caused an estimated $30,000 in damage on Sunday, authorities said.

The fire began in the kitchen of a single family home on the 2900 block of Jacktar Avenue about 4:45 p.m., said Battalion Chief Darwin Base of the Oxnard Fire Department.

Someone had left a plastic toaster on the stove and a lit burner set it on fire, Base said. The fire then spread to cabinets.

Firefighters knocked down the blaze in less than 10 minutes and no one was injured, Base said.

A fire burning in the Los Padres National Forest northwest of Santa Barbara was 60 percent contained as of this morning, authorities said.

The fire has burned 482 acres but no structures have been damaged and no injuries have been reported, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The blaze began seven miles northwest of Santa Barbara at 5:56 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators had not determined the cause of the blaze this morning.

Traffic: At 6:47 a.m., the California Highway Patrol was not reporting any traffic accidents or hazards on county roadways.

Weather: Sunny and hot weather is on the horizon today, the National Weather Service reported.

Temperatures are expected to creep toward 100 in valleys and hang around the 80s on the coast.

A red flag warning is in place through midnight for local mountains. Winds gusting up to 45 miles per hour, high temperatures and low humidity are contributing to the danger of quick spreading fires.

Hey, I had that same question!! Toaster+stove...maybe they wanted their meal extra crispy?? Anywho, thank God nobody was injured, especially kids, they're always the ones that end up getting hurt when adults make stupid mistakes...
