Missing hiker located by Sheriff's deputies

More from Other NewsVentura County Sheriff's Department deputies used a helicopter early this morning to locate a 42-year-old Ojai man who'd become lost while hiking.
Matt Gurney was found shortly after midnight on by deputies. Gurney was in an isolated area of the Santa Paula Canyon in the Los Padres National Forest.
Gurney had set off on the hike earlier in the day, telling his girlfriend he intended to go on a 12-hour hike.
But his girlfriend became worried when Gurney failed to return by nightfall. She notified the Sheriff's Department.
Deputies used night-vision goggles to look for Gurney. They found him after he shined his flashlight at the helicopter.
The Sheriff's Department is encouraging hikers to share their hiking plans with others before leaving.
The plan should include the intended hiking route and estimated time of return.
Hikers who get lost should stay where they are after nightfall, according to the Sheriff's Department. Hikers are more likely to hurt themselves while hiking at night.
