Five-week course helps seniors sharpen their minds

The Gables of Ojai and the Ojai Rotary Club are presenting a five-week memory training course to help exercise the mind and develop new techniques for recalling information.

The course will begin at 9:30 a.m. July 10 at The Gables, 701 N. Montgomery St., Ojai. After the first class, the other classes will be from 10 a.m. to noon.

The course was developed by the UCLA Center on Aging. Participants will be given skill-building exercises to work on at home. The training is designed for adults without neurologically based cognitive impairment.

Sponsored by Ojai Rotary Club as a community service, the course is being taught by UCLA-trained volunteers Don Anderson and Nita Whaley. The cost of $15 includes a copy of "The Memory Bible" and is payable at the first meeting by cash or check to Ojai Rotary.

VENTURA COUNTY

Power wheelchairs available for people with low mobility

The Senior Wheels USA Program makes power (electric) wheelchairs available to those 65 and up and to the permanently disabled at no cost to recipients if they qualify.

Power wheelchairs are provided to those who cannot walk and cannot self-propel a manual wheelchair and who meet the guidelines of the program. No deposit is required. For more information call 800-246-6010.

AGOURA HILLS

Excursion to Indian casino planned for mid-July

The Agoura Hills Older Adult/Senior Recreation Program is offering a gaming trip to San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino. The excursion will be July 11, with a bus leaving the Agoura Hills Recreation Center at 8 a.m. and returning at approximately 5 p.m.

Cost is $15, and registration is being taken in person and by mail.
