Unsung heroes work in all weather, with smiles.
The Crossing Guards of Simi Valley were honored with a luncheon outside the City Services offices on June 15 by Laurie Allen and Eileen Richardson, Realtors with Rodeo Realty, Inc.
For the annual luncheon, the team collected gift certificates donated by local merchants to thank these wonderful men and women for their endless time and energy keeping the children of Simi Valley safe.
There was special recognition for two of the Crossing Guards: Fred Wertheim, who is retiring after 17 years, received a plaque from the City of Simi Valley; and Ray Orsini received applause for 20 years at his post.
"As for the donors, most of the merchants, like Green Acres Market, The Stray Steer, Red's BBQ, Chef Burger 2, and Eggs N' Things have been contributing from the beginning, however we also had a few newcomers such as Coco d'amour, Lamppost Pizza and The Magical Kitchen," Allen said.
"And Big Pat's, the new retro diner on Tapo Street, donated an old-fashioned banana split for each and every guard!" Richardson added.
The luncheon, a big hit with the guards, was catered by Carrillo's Mexican Restaurant who also donated individual certificates for the guards.
Richardson also commended Rodeo Realty's Broker/owner, Syd Leibovitch for his generous contribution of fleece jackets, playing cards and pens for each guard. "Syd's generosity continues to amaze me," Allen said. "He's in the process of opening three new offices and he still took the time to make this donation without us even asking."
Allen and Richardson said it's their hope that the community will support the merchants that continuously support the community.
