Oaks Christian draws difficult assignment
In its five playoff appearances, three-time Division V girls' soccer co-champion Oaks Christian School has never failed to reach the quarterfinals.
Advancing out of the first round could be a difficult assignment for Oaks Christian. If it makes it that far.
A fourth-place Tri-Valley League finisher, Oaks Christian was assigned a wild-card road game against Crossroads on Wednesday. Should Oaks Christian win that game, it would face No. 4 seed Brentwood, the Olympic League champion, in the opening round Friday.
Pairings for girls' water polo, girls' and boys' soccer were released Monday.
Oak Park, which shared the 2003 title with Oaks Christian, was seeded No. 3 in Division V. Oak Park opens the playoffs at home Friday against Marlborough.
A semifinalist in each of the last seven seasons, Marmonte League champion Agoura was seeded No. 2 in the Division II girls' water polo playoffs.
Agoura, the Division IV runner-up the last two years, faces the winner of today's wild-card game between Ventura and host Redondo in the first round on Friday.
Longtime section power Santa Barbara will be at home Friday against Thousand Oaks.
The winner of Friday's Royal at Palos Verdes game could face 2006 Division II runner-up Villa Park in the quarterfinals on Feb. 20.
Realigned Division IV girls' water polo has a one of the sport's largest draws — a 32-team bracket. Because of the extra round, Division IV teams dive into the pool today. Pacifica, Camarillo and Oaks Christian have first-round games while No. 3 seed Rio Mesa and No. 4 Malibu have byes.
If Rio Mesa wins two games, it would become the first Pacific View League girls' water polo program to make a CIF semifinal appearance.
A victim of its own success — five finals appearances and three titles over the last seven years — Buena was bumped to Division II girls' soccer this season.
Buena (19-2-4), which opens the playoffs Friday at home against West Torrance, finds itself in the same half of the draw with No. 2 seed Mater Dei and No. 3 Tesoro. If Ventura wins its opener at Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks, the Cougars will likely play No. 1 seed Upland in the second round.
The realignment eliminates the possibility of playoff matchups between Channel and Marmonte programs.
Marmonte League champion Thousand Oaks will face the winner of the wild card game between Valencia and Knight in the Division II opener on Friday.
In a scheduling oddity, Thacher and Frazier Mountain are paired in wild card games in boys' and girls' soccer in Ojai.
If Thacher wins its Division VI girls' soccer game against Frazier Mountain, it will be on the road Friday against Frontier League champion. The two schools play a boys' soccer game on Wednesday.
Marmonte League boys' soccer runner-up Thousand Oaks didn't receive much of a break in the Division I playoffs. If the Lancers defeat Lancaster on Saturday at home, they will likely play No. 1 seed Long Beach Wilson on Feb. 21.
Royal, the Marmonte champion, opens its postseason at home aganst Jordan. In Royal's playoff path is a possible quarterfinal game against No. 2 seed Milikan.
Camarillo and Pacifica, the top Pacific View League boys' soccer teams, could find themselves paired against high Division IV seeds in the second round.
