Location, location, location. It's a Realtor's mantra when selling a house and, it turns out, a factor in determining a restaurant's popularity.

Spectrum Bar & Restaurant is a case in point. Its location — perched on the second story of the Harbor Landing complex in Oxnard — means that it offers a panoramic view of the docks and Channel Islands Harbor. It also offers food and drinks in a bright blue bar area and dining room. There's even a fish tank thrown in for atmosphere, and to divide the two areas.

Happily, the view can be seen from either room. A balcony provides still more opportunity to savor the setting as well as the food.

Spectrum opened about a year and a half ago and is owned by Barry and Susan Beauchamp. Joshua Shelton is the executive chef.

We were looking for a Sunday breakfast place and Spectrum popped up in our files.

Saturdays and Sundays are the only days Spectrum gets sailing early in the day, with breakfast from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (The restaurant also serves dinner nightly from a substantial menu, and has a page of lighter favorites served "all day and all night.")

When we dropped by on a Sunday morning, there were what looked like regulars at the bar sipping Bloody Marys. We were joined in the dining room by a couple or two, plus a table-for-eight where the conversation seemed focused on ships and sailing — not surprising, given the location.

Spectrum serves the usual breakfast fare with a few unusual preparations. There are pancakes, a breakfast burrito, eggs with ham, sausage or steak, at least two versions of eggs Benedict and a selection of omelets.

We went for one basic plate and one more glamorous: eggs a la carte with sides of grilled ham and fried potatoes (a total of $7), and the seafood omelet ($9), which came with a hearty helping of potatoes and a choice of toast.

We also shared a glass of orange juice, which wasn't fresh-squeezed but, at $3, was on a par with the price at other restaurants.

My friend was content with the eggs "over medium" and we both really liked the grilled ham. The thin-sliced potatoes on both plates, while crisp and tasty enough, were fried to a very dark turn.

The seafood omelet was quite a mouthful. It contained plenty of seafood, inside and over the top, all mixed together in a slightly garlicky sauce. I don't think I've ever seen so much seafood in an omelet, with lots of sliced scallops and plenty of crab chunks. Melted cheese oozed from inside and added to the overall richness of the preparation. It was such a daunting dish that I ended up eating all of the seafood I could extract, and only a little of the very good egg portion of the omelet.

I asked, belatedly, if fruit or tomato could be subbed for the potatoes and our helpful server said yes. That would be a good way to go, as the accompanying toast or English muffin is a substantial addition in itself.

Spectrum puts an accent on its music scene, with entertainment available Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights. And it does seem like a genial place to while away a few hours with music in the air — and a view on the horizon.
