Local roundup: Dec. 31

Simi Valley High was one missed shot away from one of the biggest wins by its boys' basketball program in nearly a decade.

All-tournament selection Lorne Jackson of Simi Valley had a career-high 39 points, including a school-record 20 free throws, in Saturday's 84-83 loss to nationally ranked Dominguez in the championship game of the MaxPreps Holiday Classic National Division in Torrey Pines.

Battling back from a 13-point second-half deficit, Simi Valley (13-1) grabbed an 83-82 lead on a 3-point field goal by all-tournament pick Michael Meza with 21.9 seconds left in the game for the last of the Pioneers' 31 points in the quarter.

Dominguez (11-1), ranked in the top 20 of several national polls, worked the ball for one last shot. Darrel Espy's shot was short, but Dominick Lacosta grabbed the offensive rebound and scored the winning basket with one second left.

"We lost the game, but we won a lot of respect," said Simi Valley coach Christian Aurand.

Meza and Brad Lewis added 18 and 16 points, respectively, for Simi Valley, which saw its 13-game winning streak to start the season stopped.

Myron Green led Dominguez with 20 points. Tournament MVP Jordan Hamilton scored 15 points.
