It was standing room only at Somis School as the students in Kindergarten through 8th grade presented two outstanding Winter Concerts under the musical direction of Mr. Scott Murphy.  The first night featured the Kindergarten through 3rd grade class, as well as the Award Winning Marimba Band.  The second night featured the Beginning Band, Advanced Band and Recorders.

"Celebrations Around The World" was the theme for the first Winter Concert on December 18th.  The 3rd grade class and The Award Winning Marimba Band opened the night with the Zimbabwean Song of Welcome, Maranje.  The audience was treated to folk songs of celebration from Mexico, the Caribbean, China and South Africa, as well as jewish holiday songs and traditional american songs.  For those of you familiar with the popular "gift of music" story last month, the highlight of the evening came when Mr. Murphy dedicated a South African song of thanks to Mrs. Wilda Simpson as The Marimba Band played beautiful music on the Marimbas donated by the avid Your Hub reader.

"A Night Of Traditional Music" was the theme for the second night of the Somis School Winter Concert on December 20th.  The Beginning Band opened the evening with a traditional english carol, two folk songs and an african noel.  The 4th grade Recorders followed with four traditional songs with the highlight of their performance being the special arrangement of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star Wars.  The Award Winning Advanced Band amazed the crowd with seven classic holiday songs.  Carlos Gutierrez and Danny Ramirez showed remarkable talent alternating between percussion and piano with the help of Kanoko Uno.  Jorge Garcia and Hugo Galvez blew the audience away with their Saxophone, Trumpet and French Horn expertise!  Special thanks to Mr. Murphy for his dynamic music direction, and his dedication to the Somis School Music Program.
