SOFTBALL

NEWBURY PARK: Newbury Park Girls Softball welcomes all girls ages 4 to 14 to register for recreational league play in 2008. On-site registration dates have passed, but players can register by mail or online until Dec. 31 at www.newburyparkgirlssoftball.com. Player evaluations will be conducted at Borchard Park on Jan. 5, for 8-and-under and 10-and-under divisions, and on Jan. 12, for 12-and-under and 14-and-under divisions. Player evaluations do not apply to the 6-and-under division players. Opening Day is Feb. 23 and regular season will continue through early May. All games will be played at Borchard Park. BASEBALL
EL RIO LITTLE LEAGUE: El Rio Little League will hold early registration on Saturday at the Ernest Almanza Community Gym adjacent to Rio Del Valle School in Oxnard. Registration will run from 9 a.m. to noon. The league is open to players 4-18 years of age. Information: 278-2624.
CAMARILLO REGISTRATION: Camarillo Pony Baseball will hold registration through Jan. 3 for players ages 5-19. All players 7-19 must attend a skill rating at the baseball fields at the corner of Temple Avenue and Ponderosa Drive. Skills Ratings will be held on the following dates for players ages 7-14: Jan. 5, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., or Jan. 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Colt skill ratings for players ages 15-19 will be Feb. 24 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Park. FOOTHILL LITTLE LEAGUE AND JUNIORS DIVISION: Foothill Little League and its Juniors Division will hold registration for spring baseball on Jan. 11(6-9 p.m.), Saturday, Jan. 12 (9 a.m.-noon) and Jan. 16 (6-9 p.m.) at Poinsettia Elementary School, 350 N. Victoria Ave., Ventura. Cost is $95 per player, for all divisions except T-Ball ($75 per player), with a $5 per sibling discount. Players must be 5-years-old by April 30, 2008. WARRIORS HOST TOURNAMENT: The Ventura County Warriors will host a pre-Martin Luther King Tournament on Jan. 11-13 at Ventura's Camino Real Park and the Oxnard Softball Complex. There will be seven lighted fields. Food and snacks will be available. Divisions will be 7 and under, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. All youth teams are invited. Awards will be given to the top two teams. SOUTH OXNARD: Registration for South Oxnard Little League will take place on Jan. 5, 12, 19 and 26 and Feb. 2 and 9 at Johnson Creek Park snack bar behind Blackstock Junior High. Cost is $85 for the first child and $10 discount for the second child. The league is for players 5-14. Bring a birth certificate and proof of residency. NIKE CAMPS: Robert Steele will direct Nike SPARQ baseball speed camps. The eight-week camp will run on Saturdays from 3 to 5 p.m. at old Agoura Park, 5301 Chesebro Road, Agoura Hills. BASKETBALL
HOOP SHOOT: The Ventura Elks Lodge No. 1430 will host a free hoop shot contest for boys and girls ages 8-13. Ages will be as of April 1, 2008. The free-throw shooting competition will be Jan. 8 with registration at 5:30 p.m. and competition at 6 p.m. Winners from each division will be eligible to compete in the district level. ACHERY

GIRLS' BASKETBALL
HEAT TOURNAMENTS: James White, director of the Heat travel team, is planning for the 2008 high school club season with college viewing tournaments. Heat stands for helping educate athletes in training. Information: White at 485-4328 or 509-9294.
FUSION TRYOUTS: The North County Fusion of Ventura is looking to add a travel ball player. The club's mission is train girls for high school basketball and to have fun.
