Golden withdraws name from UCLA coaching search

Temple coach Al Golden withdrew his name from consideration for the opening at UCLA and will remain with the Owls.

Golden, 5-19 in his first two years at Temple, interviewed twice for the job that opened after the Bruins fired Karl Dorrell.

In a statement from Temple on Wednesday, Golden said he was "flattered" to have been contacted by UCLA, but instead looked forward to a bright future at Temple.

Oft-injured Prior joins hometown Padres

Mark Prior and his hometown San Diego Padres agreed to a $1 million, one-year contract.

Prior, whose once-promising career has been sidetracked by various injuries, missed the 2007 season after undergoing right shoulder surgery on April 24. He last pitched for the Chicago Cubs in 2006, when he made nine starts and went 1-6 with a 7.21 ERA.

Clemens' lawyers investigating allegations of drug use in Mitchell Report: Roger Clemens' lawyers are investigating accusations in the Mitchell Report that say the star pitcher used steroids and human growth hormone.

Clemens was the biggest name in this month's report by former Senate majority leader George Mitchell that detailed widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball. The seven-time Cy Young Award winner has repeatedly denied using steroids or HGH.

OBITUARY

Former Abilene Christian track coach Jackson dies

Oliver Jackson, the former Abilene Christian track and field coach whose athletes won four Olympic gold medals and set 15 world records, died Wednesday. He was 87.

Jackson died at home of natural causes with family members at his side, said Lance Fleming, the Abilene Christian sports information director.

Jackson, a former president of the U.S. Track and Field Coaches Association, was head track and field coach at Abilene Christian for 16 years.

U.S., Canada open world championships with wins

Kyle Okposo, the former Minnesota player set to sign with the New York Islanders, had a goal and an assist to help the United States open the World Junior Hockey Championships with a 5-1 victory over Kazakhstan at Liberec, Czech Republic.

Okposo, selected seventh overall in the NHL 2006 draft, left the Golden Gophers last week, and has begun negotiations with the Islanders on an entry-level contract.

Denver's Tyler Ruegsegger and New Hampshire's James vanRiemsdyk also each had a goal and assist, and Boston University's Colin Wilson and Minnesota's Mike Carman added goals. Jeremy Smith, who plays for Plymouth in the Ontario Hockey League, made 17 saves, allowing only Alexander Kurshuk's game-opening goal.

In the other Group B game, Russia beat Finland 7-4. In Group A play in Pardubice, John Tavares scored twice in three-time defending champion Canada's 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic, and Sweden beat Slovakia 4-3.

Matthew Halischuk also scored for Canada, Steve Stamkos had three assists, and Jonathan Bernier made 44 saves for the shutout.
