The Star's Boys Water Polo First Team Profiles

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Peter Kurzeka, Agoura, Driver

The 6-foot, 180-pound senior was a standout for the CIF-Southern Section Division IV champion Chargers. The Marmonte League and CIF Division IV MVP is the Star's Player of the Year. He had 143 goals, 62 assists, 72 steals, 33 drawn ejections and 18 field blocks. Kurzeka led the team in all categories except for field blocks. He broke the 1994 record goal of 122 set by Chris Driscoll in 1994. He was a first team All-County Star performer last season when Agoura and Royal shared the league championship. Kurzeka enjoys surfing, playing video games and golf when he's not playing water polo. He's undecided about college, but wants to play for a Division I school in California. "Talladega Nights" is his favorite movie. "Man vs. Wild" is Kurzeka's favorite TV show. Tom Petty is his favorite singer. Steak is Kurzeka's favorite food. Steve Nash is his favorite athlete. The Dodgers are his favorite team.



THE STAR’S FIRST TEAM

Brian Boswell, Ventura, 2-meter offense

Boswell, 6-2, 210 pounds, returns to the All-Ventura County Star first team as a senior. He scored 100 goals, had 75 steals and 57 assists for the Channel League champion Cougars — quarterfinalists in the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs. The academic All-American has a 4.5 grade point average and is undecided about his college choice. He was this season's Channel League MVP. He's a third-team All-American player. He also earned all-CIF and all-Channel League recognition. Boswell enjoys surfing. "Superbad" is a favorite movie. "The Office" is his favorite TV show. Red Hot Chili Peppers is his favorite band. Pizza is his favorite food. Brett Favre is his favorite athlete.



Matt Carlson, Agoura, Hole set

The senior was the MVP in the Coronado Tournament as the Chargers finished second, but Carslon was recognized for his defensive prowess. Undecided about his college choice, the 5-foot-11, 170-pound player was one of the leaders for his CIF-Southern Section Division IV championship team. He recorded 57 goals, 48 assists and 69 steals, earning all-league and first-team all-CIF honors. He also was instrumental in leading the Chargers to a third-place finish in the CIF Masters Tournament, featuring the 16 top teams from six CIF divisions. Carlson enjoys playing Guitar Hero. His favorite movie is "300." "Scrubs" is his favorite TV show. The Offspring and the Dave Matthews Band are his favorite musicians. Mexican is his favorite food. The Oakland Raiders are his favorite team.



Brent McCunney, Westlake, 2-meter defense, hole set

The all-Marmonte League and all-CIF players will play college water polo at UC Berkeley. The 6-1, 180-pound senior scored a Westlake school record 104 goals. He had 108 steals, 34 assists, 18 blocked shots and 32 kickouts. He's a 4.0 student and scholar-athlete. McCunney enjoys remote-control car racing. "Braveheart" is his favorite movie. "Scrubs" is his favorite TV show. Strawberries are a favorite food. DJ Sammy is his favorite musician. Tony Azevedo is his favorite athlete. The Cal Bears are his favorite team.



Ryan Paris, Agoura, Goalie

The 5-foot-9, 155-pound senior was a standout for coach Dustin Litvak's talented CIF and Marmonte League championship team. He had 334 saves, 32 assists and 46 steals. He was the only goalie on the CIF first team and co-MVP goalie in league. Paris had 1,183 career saves, ranking second all-time in CIF. Paris is undecided about college. Surfing, soccer and playing video games are hobbies. "Blackhawk Down" is his favorite movie. "Family Guy" is his favorite TV show. The Expendables are his favorite band. He likes all foods. The Dodgers are his favorite team.



Tyler Reardon, Oaks Christian, Utility

The 6-1, 170-pound senior was an all-Tri-Valley League first-team and All-CIF second-team selection in Division IV. Playing sports and video games are his favorite hobbies. "Invincible" is his favorite movie. "SportsCenter" is his favorite TV show. Barbecue chicken is a favorite food. Fall Out Boys is his favorite band. LaDanian Tomlinson is his favorite athlete. The San Diego Chargers are his favorite team.



Barry Snyder, Royal, Utility

Snyder, a 6-1 and 180-pound senior, scored 108 goals and recorded 51 assists for the Marmonte League runner-up Highlanders. Snyder, who is undecided about his college choice, guided Royal to the CIF Southern Section Division IV semifinals where it lost to Mira Costa. The first-team all-CIF player is a three-time Royal scholar-athlete award winner. His hobbies include surfing, snowboarding, painting and photography. "Laird" is his favorite movie. "The Simpsons" are Snyder's favorite TV show. He loves eating steak and mashed potatoes. Miles Davis is his favorite musician. Michael Jordan is his favorite athlete. The Lakers are his favorite team.
