Top county football players good by any yardstick
Small schools, large performances.
So it was for Cierre Wood, Santa Clara High's dynamic junior running back, and Sean Westgate, Oak Park High's standout senior linebacker.
Forging impact seasons for their small-school programs, Westgate and Wood earn special honors at season's end.
Wood is The Star's football Player of the Year on Offense, while Westgate is selected as the Player of the Year on defense.
They are two of the kind when it comes to dominating a football game.
Wood's remarkable campaign included rushing for 2,615 yards, averaging 14.6 yards per carry and scoring 42 touchdowns.
Oh yes, Wood also led Santa Clara to its first CIF-Southern Section championship since 1965.
The 6-foot, 195-pounder twice registered games with more than 300 rushing yards, and ran for 211 yards an one clutch touchdown in Santa Clara's 20-14 victory, in overtime, over Bishop Diego in the Northwest Division championship game.
Westgate, a 5-foot-11, 208-pounder, was full fury on the football field.
He led the Eagles with 130 tackles while also notching five sacks, three blocked punts, one interception and one fumble recovery.
