Authorities this afternoon identified the Oxnard man who was killed when his car flipped over near Highway 101 in Oxnard early this morning.
Gregorio Victoria Gonzalez, 21, was traveling northbound on Rice Road just past Gonzales Road when he drove off the road and hit a large traffic sign while trying to negotiate a curve in the road, authorities said.
“It appears that the car drifted off the road, started tumbling, and the driver got ejected from the car,” said Senior Officer Maria Peña of the Oxnard Police Department. Victoria Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident was reported to police by a passing motorist about 4:25 a.m., Peña said.
The scene of the accident was cordoned off with police tape this morning and traffic was being diverted while investigators pieced together what happened.
Victoria Gonzalez’s car was still resting on its roof on a dirt road next to Rice Avenue this morning. The dirt road, which separates Rice from a agricultural field, is situated below an embankment.
Oxnard police this morning had not determined what caused the driver to drift off the road.
Peña said a beer carton and a beer can were found at the scene, but investigators were not sure if they came from the car, or if they were already at the scene, she said.
Investigators won’t know if alcohol played a role in the collision until toxicology tests are completed.
Rice avenue was closed between Gonzales Road and Highway 101 as a result of the crash. Police estimate the section of roadway will remain closed until about 10 a.m.
By late this morning, traffic was moving smoothly near the scene of the accident.
The roadway was open again by about 10 a.m.
Oxnard police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to call Officer Peña at 385-7750.

So tragic to loose someone on Christmas Eve! Well any day as far as that goes.......... knowing my daughter is down that way waiting to get a ride home I get chills wondering who was the driver and if anyone else was in the car. Although it appears it was just the driver in the car. So so sad!!!! My prayers and Condolences go out to the family......so devestating!!!!!!
