Bank robber asks for getaway ride at skate shop

LA MESA (AP) — Police say a bank robber in San Diego County bought himself a getaway ride.

Lt. David Bond says a man walked into a Wells Fargo branch in La Mesa shortly before noon Saturday, claimed to have a gun and walked out with an undisclosed amount of cash.

He then walked a block to a surf and skate shop where he offered $100 to anyone who would give him a ride.

Bond says it's unclear what reason the robber gave for needing a ride — he didn't say it was to flee a holdup.

A 20-year-old customer agreed and was last seen driving off with two friends and the robber in an SUV.

Police say the driver didn't do anything wrong, but they'd like to find him and learn where he dropped his passenger.

Bond says it's the first time he's heard of a crook paying for a ride — although occasionally a robber has taken a cab.
