The Star's Boys Cross Country First Team Profiles

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Alex Routh, Royal High

The senior had one of the fastest times of the day — 15 minutes, 10 seconds — at the CIF-Southern Section Finals, but did not qualify for state despite finishing 10th in his Division I heat. The Marmonte League champion placed sixth at the Clovis Invitational. Routh was a member of the Royal teams that won the 2005 Division I state title and placed second last fall. Routh's favorite athlete is American distance running record holder Alan Webb. His favorite movie is "Grandma's Boy." He like watching the TV show "Heroes" and eating pizza. Routh's favorite pro football team is the Indianapolis Colts. Routh has been a scholar athlete at Royal for four years. He likes snowboarding and spending time with his friends.



THE STAR’S FIRST TEAM

Jose Alcantar, Hueneme

Closing out his high school cross country career, the Hueneme senior placed second at the CIF Division II state championships in Fresno. Alcantar was a three-time state finalist. The two-time Pacific View League champion was sixth at the CIF Division II section championships. In his spare time, Alcantar enjoys drawing and writing. His favorite movie is "Endurance Without Limits." Alcantar's favorite athlete is former Olympic gold medal distance runner Billy Mills. His favorite meal is Orange chicken. Alcantar likes to listen to the band "Darkest Hour."



Travis Edwards, Royal High

It didn't take long for the Royal sophomore to make his presence known. At the Woodbridge Invitational, Edwards ran a time of 14:56. He placed sixth at the Clovis Invitational. At the CIF Divisional section finals, Edwards finished 22nd in 15:22. Edwards was third at the Marmonte League championships. His favorite movie is "300." Edwards' favorite player is Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre. Green Bay and UCLA are his favorite pro and college teams. "The Office" is his favorite TV show. Edwards' favorite food is broccoli. He likes listening to the band G-Unit.



Sean Gildea, Thousand Oaks

The Marmonte League runner-up was 22nd at the Woodbridge Invitational and sixth at the Pepperdine Invitational. The junior had a time of 15:58 for 5K at the Clovis Invitational and 15:37 at the CIF Division I section finals at Mount San Antonio College. Gildea likes to run and play ultimate frisbee during his off time. His favorite TV show is "24." Spaghetti is his favorite meal. Gildea's favorite team is the Philadelphia Eagles. Rise Against is his favorite band. Cyclist Lance Armstrong is the athlete that Gildea admires the most.



James Goldstein, Oak Park

Goldstein became one of the youngest boys' champions in the history of the Ventura County Championships, winning the individual title as a sophomore. One week later, Goldstein won the Tri-Valley League championship. Goldstein was fifth at the Division III section final and 14th at the state championships. Goldstein's second-place finish helped Oak Park win the team title at the Clovis Invitational. He has made the honor roll twice at Oak Park. Goldstein enjoys watching ESPN's Sportscenter. His favorite athlete is Tour de France champion cyclist Lance Armstrong. Goldstein's favorite food is steak. His favorite movie is "Miracle." The UCLA Bruins are his favorite team.



Garrison Gourdeau, Oak Park

Gourdeau was the top finisher on Oak Park's Division III state runner-up team, placing 11th in 15:57. At the CIF Division III section finals, Gourdeau was 12th as Oak Park brought home a second-place finish. The senior is one of the county's best milers in track with a personal-best time of 4:22. Gourdeau likes playing basketball, ping pong and other athletic activities. His mother's pasta warms Gordeau's heart. He likes to watch Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. Gourdeau's favorite TV show is "Prison Break."



Charlie Petrie, Oaks Christian

Petrie was the frontrunner on the Oaks Christian team that placed seventh at the CIF Division IV state championship. He was ninth overall, earning all-state honors. Petrie placed third at the CIF Finals as Oaks Christian finished third, five points out of second place. He was fifth at the Tri-Valley League Championships. During his off time, Petrie enjoys reading. His favorite movie is "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days." Petrie's favorite TV show is "The Office."
