Local briefs: Dec. 22

Donor honors his sister with gift

Ron Busick remembers how his older sister watched over him. That's why he donated $50 to the Salvation Army in memory of Phyllis Hall, who died of cancer in August.

Busick, who lives in Camarillo, was the last of six children. Phyllis was the fifth child, 12 years older than him.

"On Sunday morning, our folks would still be sleeping, and she'd get up and make us peanut butter sandwiches," Busick said. "Then she'd read the comic pages to me."

When Busick was in high school, his sister and her husband welcomed him into their home, where he spent much of his time.

"She's always been there for me," Busick said. "She always had an ear to listen."

The Star's annual Bellringer drive will run through Christmas, with the newspaper publishing lists of readers' contributions. All money raised will be given to the Salvation Army to serve needy local people.

For a list of new donors and where to send contributions, see page B7.
