Arraignment set for fatal crash suspect
Injured CHP officer regains consciousness
Jeremy White made his first appearance in Ventura County Superior Court on Friday. He is in custody on $500,000 bail and his arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 7.
Photos by Eric Parsons / Star staff More than 20 California Highway Patrol officers attend the hearing Friday for Jeremy White. White faces charges in a crash that critically injured a CHP officer and killed a 20-year-old man on Highway 101.
The man accused of plowing his pickup truck into the back of a sport utility vehicle on Wednesday, killing a 20-year-old man and critically injuring a California Highway Patrol officer, made his first court appearance Friday.
Jeremy White, 20, of Paso Robles is in custody on $500,000 bail. Superior Court Judge Kevin McGee scheduled his arraignment for Jan. 7.
The large courtroom was packed and more than 20 CHP officers attended the hearing. White's relatives, who were visibly upset, were also in the courtroom but declined to comment.
The accident occurred on the right shoulder of northbound Highway 101 near La Conchita. It killed 21-year-old Andreas Parra of Phoenix and critically injured 36-year-old CHP motorcycle officer Anthony Pedeferri.
Pedeferri regained consciousness during the night Thursday, but he remained in critical condition Friday, said Officer Shawna Davison, a spokeswoman for the CHP.
Pedeferri, an 11-year department veteran and accomplished triathlete, was thrown about 20 yards into the brush when the truck struck the SUV he had pulled over during a traffic stop.
White is facing charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony drunken driving and causing injury, and transportation of marijuana, according to prosecutor Scott Hendrickson.
Hendrickson declined to say how much marijuana White is accused of transporting.
White's attorney, William Gamble of Paso Robles, told Ventura County Superior Court Judge Kevin McGee that he had no objections regarding White's bail because he didn't yet have any information about the case.
Outside the courtroom, Gamble said the District Attorney's Office wouldn't give him police reports or other documents until he made Friday's initial court appearance.
Gamble said he hadn't yet talked to his client about charges.
The CHP is still looking for people who witnessed the crash but have not yet spoken to authorities. They are asked to call the CHP at 477-4100.

Please, anyone who saw anything regarding this accident give a call to the authorities.
My condolences to all involved. There is only sadness in this story from the injured officer to the young man who caused this tragedy.
Both lives will never be the same and the damage is irrepairable. My prayers to all the families.

Talk about a lynching 20 chp show up at the hearing. OH I see they were all wearing there uniforms which tells me. We as tax payers were paying for them to be there . I think there time would be more well spent patrolling the highway looking for dangerous drivers so that something like this can be limited in the future. The young man who I am sure did not decide that day that he would hop in his truck and seek out to kill and seriously injure someone. The court will handle it now. This is how the system works. He will have his day in court and all the facts will come forward. I am a little outraged that this type of intimidation tactics are being presented. If they wanted to go to the hearing that is fine but not in uniform. Also I hate to bring this up but when two police officers drive over a woman head and kill her on the beach where they do not belong. Get off with a hand slap. And this young man is involved in this tragic event gets this kind of treatment before all the facts are out is not right. Are we living in another country or are we still in America????????????

The CHP officers are showing their support to their friend and colleague. Law enforcement organizations are very much like families and I'm sure they are all very distraught over what happened.
Wasn't White's family there supporting him?
Posted by pacman08 on December 22, 2007 at 10:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I'm sure all 20 of those CHP officers would love to be at home with their families and friends but instead they're showing their support for a critically injured colleague and the death of a fellow citizen. It's called comradery. These officers are showing their support for a colleage just as any other group of people associated to any organization would. It's legal, it shows pride, and it shows support. dcsfancy/just_a_thought obviously doesn't like the way cops handle their business, but you know what? Too bad. CHP has had numerous officers injured/killed this year, and if someone has a problem with them showing up in court to show support for another injured officer well I think that's rather unfortunate. If someone feels intimidated by 20 cops in a court room, well then that person needs to think twice before doing something so stupid as getting wasted and then driving down the freeway. Jeremy White made the choice to drive in his intoxicated condition, he killed someone and has critically injured another. He needs to deal with his decision. Those of you who sympathize for White and assume he's being "intimidated" should just be thankful it wasn't your family member he killed or put in the hospital.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! You are absolutely right I Love Ventura...law enforcement officers are like brothers to one another. And dsc_fancy...you should be more upset that our tax dollars are going to be paying for the defendant to be in jail for the results of his failure to be a responsible citizen.

The CHP officers should be there, and yes, they SHOULD wear their uniforms, even if they are OFF duty. They are a brotherhood and they represent the many who serve us and try to protect the rest of us from people who do dangerous and foolish things, such as drink & drive. Don't you ever wonder how many of those cops are upset wishing that they had seen Jeremy White's erratic driving and pulled him over? Next time you get stopped at a DUI checkpoint and you feel frustrated by it, think about this incident and show some respect to the system that tries to keep us safe from this type of thing happening. The CHP deserves to be there and SHOULD be there, IN UNIFORM, because that is their life they are helping to defend. Think about that dsc_fancy!

I don't understand why adam.roland thinks supporting a friend and colleague by attending the arraignment of the person who is accused of committing the crime that has left him laying in a hospital bed is a "propoganda statement". The Star published the picture, not the CHP. A lot of your other comments are just not even worth commenting on. I am not unintelligent...I am actually extremely intelligent, and yet, I still believe that we should all be glad that there are those who are willing to serve the public and be supportive of them when such a tragedy hits home. If you are so intelligent, what is the excuse for your ignorance?

I know Tony, we ride our bikes together. He was doing his job, what was Jeremy White doing? As for the CHP officers, Jeremy can have all of his friends show up drunk and stoned to show their support. I hope he goes down. Hard.

I think it was great for the CHP officers to show their support in court. Keep it up. You make us proud.
There are a couple of people who post negative comments anytime there is an article involving law enforcement. We know who they are and expect to hear the same sad song over and over. How they are tired of being hasseled by "the man". There is obviously a personal issue with police officers.
I wish officer Pedeferri a full and speedy recovery and my thoughts are with the victim's family.

pacman08 I don't have a problem with 20 co workers showing support. I do have a problem with them doing on taxpayer time in uniform. Give me a break. I know that being a chp is one of the toughest jobs out there. They see a lot of carnage that the average Joe could never dream of. They have to deal with unimaginable personalities. Not knowing what they will encounter when they approach a vehicle. I am not a cop hater as most of you think.

just because the chp officers were there in uniform doesn't mean that they were on duty or being paid. if you've ever seen or been to a police funeral (unfortunately, i've been to too many), you'll find that very few of the officers who are there, most in uniform, are on duty or being paid. it's a show of respect and support that runs deeper than being concerned about "oh, can i put in for ot on this"?.

So very controversial............Jeremy chose to drink and drive under the influence; more often than we know. Many people do... perhaps some of his friends and family may be users/drinkers, too, occasionally or often, who knows? Jeremy hasn't respected the law for a long time I imagine. I say support and respect officers; of course they should show their support; most are decent human beings trying to better society and keep us safe - I think it is ok to show up and say "this is who we are, so you will know why we are here." It is sad to see Jeremy behind the bars; but it would be sad if he had died. He and his loved ones are in an awful hell; as are the families of the deceased and injured. God have mercy.

This is tragic. A young man has ruined his life forever, another has lost his life, and an officer has a changed life. One thing I would like to know, is why the driver of the SUV was pulled over. The internet has articles listing "speed traps", and the Rincon is listed as one of them. Too bad that a driver could have lost his life for driving 5 miles per hour over the posted limit. It makes no sense to stop a driver for driving at a speed 5, 10, or even 20 mile per hour different than other drivers, only to have him going "0" miles per hour when cars are driving by at 70 miles per hour. Maybe the laws need to be changed to pull over after leaving the freeway at the next exit.
No one wins this one. But we, "Joe Taxpayer", will get to pay for this.
Posted by Lula on December 22, 2007 at 7:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I agree with mco.
The impact of this accident was probably at a high rate of speed, too. No officer to stop him then. Wonder if the officer will have memory of this incident? Lots to ponder. Jeremy was kind of a "lost" young man; not innocent and often not "sweet or kind" in the past few years. I still pity what he has done this time, because it was not on purpose; but preventable all the same. Many of our young could have been in his shoes...........sad to say.

I am amazed that some comments about the CHP Officers showing up to the court hearing are negative.
The young man, Jeremy White, killed another person-though he was under the influence, he was negligent and killed a person. He also hurt an Officer. It doesn't matter if the Officers were wearing uniforms. It's not an intimidation tactic...it's a message. The message being; Support for their fellow Officer and support for Mr. Parra. It's a reminder that innocent people were hurt/killed and families were victimized....by a drunk driver.
To those of you that believe that all Officers act in a callous and vindictive manner, think again. They are the ones who support us and come running to our doors when we need help.
God bless the Officer, his family and especially to Mr. Parra and his family.

Who cares that they showed up in their uniforms? Being a CHP officer is not an 8-5 job - maybe some were showing up before their shift or after their shift. Either way, it doesn't matter. They are there, in support of a fallen brother. Are you saying that any soldier, officer, fireman that shows up in their uniforms is on our tax dollars? What a crock! With the way society is these days, we are extremely lucky to have men and women continue to put their lives up to save worthless people.
Instead of negative comments, let's think about the fact that two little girls will be spending Christmas wishing their father recovers, a family will be mourning for the untimely death of a loved one, and another family will wonder what they could have done to step in and prevent this.
It's a tragic story during the holidays. Let's not lose sight of the real issue here.

WOW....adam roland, who's making the propaganda statement? This message board is discussing officers showing up in court to show support for a colleague. You're turning this whole conversation around to complain about how unfair it is police officers get away with bad behavior. That's another conversation for another place. dcsfancy, you have a problem with the officers showing up in uniform on "taxpayer time"? Cops go to court daily in uniform on their days off too. You're only assuming they're their on "taxpayer time", but you don't know that. Perhaps you, adam roland and Michael Moore can all get together and make a new movie.

dcsfancy:
WOW! I have never seen such a strong attempt at a pity party. Thats sad that happened to your father(if its true, most likely not, people do not put something so personal and harsh open to the public) but it is, once again, beside the fact. We are talking about Jeremy white and what he deserves, the CHP and there family in pain as a memeber lies in a hospital bed.
I think I speak for some people on this board, if you cant keep to the subject, maybe you should "shut it" as you so kindly put it.
As for 20 CHP showing there support and love for there brother, I think it is great. In a horrific tragedy, they are sticking together and showing their support for each other. They are holding the community together as best as they can. As for the young man that will not be with his family on christmas or ever again, he will watch over his family now. And for Jeremy White...well he will get what is coming to him, if not in court, in life eventually. Karma!
And as for the rest of yall complaining about your precious tax money going to waste, it is what has kept yall alive so far, and keept the bad away from you as best as possible(easy enough way to put it so yall can understand it) And well, who cares if yall are intelligent or not, this is not about yall...so stop making it so.

I agree, "You're turning this whole conversation around to complain about how unfair it is police officers get away with bad behavior. That's another conversation for another place"
Nobody is perfect. EVERYONE makes mistakes. Yall (dcsfancy, adam.roland) have made and will continue to make mistakes. But, the young man that passed will never have that luxury. And that would be Jeremy's fault. As for mentioning the two officers that ran the woman over, they were doing there job. "casulaties of war" would best describe it, or that she was in "the wrong place at the wrong time". SO, dcsfancy, do you know every single little to big fact about what happened there? DO you know the woman or the two officers personally? Or are you just reaching that hard to make yourself look good and the CHP, that save your pathetic self daily, look bad? "Also I hate to bring this up but when two police officers drive over a woman head and kill her on the beach where they do not belong. Get off with a hand slap" have you never thought about the mental anguish one will have for the rest of his/her life after such a tragedy? Just as Jeremy White will have, whether in a cell, or his warm bed? I think, you dont. You didnt "hate to bring this up", it was an attempt to make yourself feel better.
NOW, BACK TO THE POINT... THE CHP OFFICER AND JEREMY WHITE, AND THE YOUNG MAN THAT PASSED...

Wow your some kind of woman. Do you work in the system? He may have been lost and will be on his way to be found. And the past few years he hasn't been what? I do know he was kind and sensitive always telling me to do the right things and watching over me. He would drill me on the things I shouldn't do even if maybe he himself was. I love and care about Jeremy and know the love he had in his heart for others. Maybe you and your family did things to hurt him and so many of us do to others. And if you cared so much and tried to help and knew him so well than what happened? You seem to know so much about him, his family, and friends????? Or are you one of those that pretended and still do to care???? This is terrible and sad and emotional for everyone here and I am so sorry for all the pain we all are feeling. May God be will Parra's family today as they lay him to rest and will the CHP's family as well along with all of us who are in pain.

Hope he continues to improve, be nice to see him on the job again.

ebrockway - Thanks for the update. It is hard to see loved ones on ventilator/tubes/IV's etc. Nerves and stuff do heal and even regenerate after trauma.....especially when he was in such good phsical shape before! Am praying hard for many medical and healing miracles for him; and strength for his "family".

WOW this is crazy! I knew Jeremy from back in high school I use to hang out with him all the time, he would come over to my house and I would go over to his house; to hang out! his dad owned a great restaurant there in Paso called Papa Tommy’s!.....I some what feel for Jeremy in a sense but I did see him going down the wrong path as did the people he hung out with, but I got away from him and his crowd! I guess now he'll have to face the punishment in which he has caused for himself!.......Now the whole situation with the CHP attending the court hearing sounds a little too much, it makes it look like they're all going after Jeremy for what has happened and they're going to do what they can to make sure that he gets locked up for good and for a long time; no sympathy for the devil! I understand that if the CHP officer died and the other officers attend the funeral as a brotherhood, but they don’t all have to show up together for the court hearing! By them showing up what is that going to do to make a difference on how Jeremy gets sentenced? I had a friend that got shot and was killed, it was extremely sad when his mother came to my house late at night and told me what had happened! My friends and I went to the funeral and paid our respects to our beloved friend like a brotherhood! But we didn’t go out of our way to attend the court hearing for the man that shot my friend neither did his mother! Instead we followed up on what had happen to the man through the news paper and word of mouth! And that was plenty enough! So for the CHP to sit there in the court room and to stare down at Jeremy as if he was a crazy deadly murderess is ridiculous!........Man I'm sorry this had to happen to you Jeremy! We all still think about you! DGAF all the way!

First let me say, I'm truly sorry for what has happened to everyone involved including Andreas Parras and Chp officer Anthony Pedefferi. I've known Jeremy for almost 7 or 8 years now and I feel I know him better than anyone on this blog bull*&*!. I know Jeremy did not do this intentionally and would never want to hurt or harm anyone he comes across in life. Although we do not know what happened at this point I feel people are being very cruel and heartless. They are making Jeremy seem to be this ugly person that he is not! It really pisses me off to know people can judge someone by there actions but not by knowing them truly as the person they really are. Everyone who is talking !%$# about him are gunna feel really dumb when they see that this was all an accident. My heart goes out to all the families involved in this. I know this has changed him as a person for the better and has opened his eyes to see how fragile life really is. My life has completely changed from this whole situation thats for sure. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved. I pray for full recovery for the Chp officer and also pray for strength and healing for the Parras family. As for Jeremy I hope they take it easy on him and understand that he is only human, for he did not mean for this to happen. Everyone can read this and think and say whatever the hell they want. I will be here for him through this whole thing. I care about him and wish this never happened...
