"The Russians are Coming!," the newest exhibit of George Stuart Historical Figures, sheds light on today's Russia by exploring its history of monarchy, upheaval, revolution and world power. The exhibition will run Jan. 8 through March 2 at the Museum of Ventura County.
Thirty-six quarter-life-size sculptural figures portray the personalities who shaped four centuries of Russia's development, from Ivan the Terrible through the beginnings of communism and the Soviet Union.
The figures by artist and historian George Stuart include Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Vladimir Lenin, Nicholas II and his son Tsarevich Alexis, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, Rasputin and Joseph Stalin.
Four accompanying sets of monologues by George Stuart will also be offered over the run of the exhibit:
• "Out of the Dark Age" will explore the tumultuous years in which Russia emerged from the "Time of Troubles."
• "Imperial Ambitions" will explain how Peter the Great pushed reluctant Russians into modernity, and how Catherine the Great used propaganda to make Russia a central power.
• "Empires Collide" will detail how the country was shaken by Napoleon's attack, yet went on to become a world power.
• "Collapse and Rebirth" will cover the final years of the Romanov Dynasty and the birth of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
