Head-on collision on Hwy. 33 kills Santa Paula woman

Aleysia Jenae Barrera of Santa Paula was killed in a head-on collision in Oak View Thursday afternoon, according to a statement from the California Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred about 2:50 p.m. along Highway 33 at West Willey Street during drizzly weather.

Barrera, 18, was a passenger in a northbound BMW driven by a 17-year-old boy from Ojai, according to the CHP. The BMW crossed over the double yellow lines and struck a southbound Jeep driven by 47-year-old Brian James Trushinski of Thousand Oaks.

Barrera was transported to Ojai Valley Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the BMW was transported to Ventura County Medical Center with moderate injuries. Trushinski was also taken there with minor to moderate injuries.

Highway 33 was closed after the collision.

Barbara Sanz, who lives next to the accident site, said the intersection is very dangerous. She and other neighbors have been asking for a traffic light there for years but to no avail.

The problem is not lack of a traffic light. The problem is the speed limit through there is 45mph when it should be 25 or 35 at most. As is the case, whatever the speed limit, people do about 10 mph over it. That means they are flying through there on a narrow road with numerous streets and driveways coming onto it doing about 55. A traffic light would not have kept this young man from drifting over the line into on coming traffic.

What a tragedy, and it is very interesting to see that the BMW crossed the double line, but the one who got killed was the passenger. Anyway, its a tragedy to see such young kids getting killed. I hope they at least donated the organs for somebody else.

This was a horrific tragedy. Thank you AnnaWhaat. I agree, this was an accident and no one had control of the outcome; this can happen to anyone even the "best" driver. It unfortunately takes accidents like this for the city to become more involved and remedy street conditions in order to avoid such things. To the Barrera family I pray that god grants you the strength to overcome your loss, I hope that the memories and love for your daughter give you console, and know that your daughter is with you always. To the boy and his family, he needs alot of love and support during this time. I hope he is able to continue with moving forward with his life and overcome this loss as well. I pray that this does not transcend into a meritless legal issue that will harm this boy unfairly. My sincere condolenses and prayers are with you all. God bless you.
