Cockfighting sweep nets 389 birds, four arrests

Hundreds of roosters used for cockfighting were rounded up in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties and four people were arrested during early-morning raids today at eight different locations, authorities said.

Seven sites across Ventura County and one in Carpinteria were raided, said Capt. Jerry Hernandez, a spokesman for the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. Hernandez expected to release later today the exact locations and the names of those arrested.

The raids followed a similar operation on Dec. 1, when deputies found almost 1,000 roosters used in a cockfighting operation near the Todd Road Jail outside Santa Paula.

Today's raids stemmed from information investigators gathered as part of the Dec. 1 raid, Hernandez said.

Deputies found a total of 389 roosters today, he said. Of these, 221 were euthanized and 108 were being kept as evidence.

As with the Dec. 1 raid, deputies found paraphernalia used for cockfighting, including metal spurs that are tied to the birds' legs, authorities said.

About 100 personnel from sheriff's and animal control departments in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, as well as from the Ventura County Humane Society, participated in today's raids. Hernandez said more raids are possible in the days and weeks ahead.

I'm happy those scums were caught, but, why did so many of the birds have to be euthanized? Were they too sick or injured? Or is it just that they don't know what to do with them now? In any case, I'm glad they are out of this sick business now.

Wonder if they could pass those euthanized roosters off as Christmas turkeys and distribute them to the needy through FOOD Share? And the survivors being saved as evidence - wouldn't that be a riot if all 108 are brought into a courtroom for display during a trial? c---le-doodle-doo!

I'm not condoning c--- fighting. With that said..
roosters are a fiercly proud bird. My wife brought home 3 hens years ago and one grew up to be a rooster.
that bird would strut around looking for a fight..with our dog...the neighbors dog.. our son. When he attacked our son that bird was dinner!
I'm glad the cops closed down this operation and I hope the birds will feed the homeless or less fortunate.
Maybe society will become more civilized and stop organized Boxing and kick boxing et al.
