California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell supported the Rio School District Office as they unveiled their new district office. Also at the ceremony were Ventura County Superintendent Chuck Weis, Rio School District Board Members, Brian Martin, Tim Blaylock, Robert Guilen, Simon Ayala and Rio School District Superintendent Sherianne Cotterell. The District Office Open House and Dedication ceremony, held Dec. 6, also featured proclamations by local, state and national elected officials, self-guided tours of the facility and a ribbon-cutting ceremony by the Oxnard Chamber of Commerce. The district also honored community member Robert A. Guillen with the Golden Heart Award for his tireless dedication and lifelong commitment to the Rio community and the district. Guillen's wife and son, Rio School District trustee Robert Guillen, accepted the award on his behalf due to an illness that prevented him from attending the event.The Rio School District encompasses six elementary and two middle schools. There are close to 4,200 students in the district, which serves the unincorporated community of El Rio, the RiverPark development and portions of the city of Oxnard.
