911 Please Hold.....

December 21, 2007911 Please hold......The other day the Gang in the Ivory Tower, (Ventura city hall), voted to install a 911 fee of $1.76/mo to each phone and cell phone user to help pay the 3.4 million dollar cost of the system and free up some much needed cash for hiring more police and fire folks. The $1.76/mo charge will raise around 2.7 million dollars to go towards the 911 cost. I for one suggested they charge a monthly fee of $2.65/mo that would have paid for the entire 3.4 million dollar cost. Plus $2.65 is less than a cup of Vanilla, Butterscotch, Chocolate, espresso at the local Stareback's coffee shop.Because it was considered a stated city service it was a fee and not a tax the Gang in the Ivory Tower did not need a vote of the public to install it. However on the front page of the newest paper in Ventura the headline screams, "911 phone tax approved by council". Now do you suppose that what they, the editorial staff of the paper are telling us is they think the Gang in the Ivory Tower is being less than truthful with us by saying the charge is a fee and not a tax.In any case none of us should be against a pittance like $1.76 or $2.65 to fund one of the best public safety services going. If you want more police and fire folks you are going to have to come up with the dough-re-me somewhere and this seems like the best idea I have heard.Rellis Smith
