St. Bonaventure High didn't need a CIF Division III state championship trophy to validate its football program.

No football program in the state has won more games (119) since the end of the 1998 season than St. Bonaventure.

With its 35-21 win over Modesto Central Catholic in the Division III final at the Home Depot Center last Saturday, St. Bonaventure will rank among the state's top 10 teams in the final CalHiSports.com poll for the fourth time in the last seven years, including a No. 1 ranking in 2005.

In its six seasons since being moved from the Tri-Valley League to the Channel, St. Bonaventure has won four section titles, six league championships and compiled a 77-5 overall record.

St. Bonaventure and Oaks Christian, the 2006 state team of the year, aren't the only small-schools programs that can compete against much larger-school teams.

The two Division III state championship games have showcased programs that have received little recognition outside small-school rankings.

Cardinal Newman gave No. 1 state-ranked Oaks Christian all it could handle before falling 27-20 in overtime in the 2006 Division III title game. That convinced CalHiSports.com to bump up Cardinal Newman from 49th to 13th in the final rankings.

Likewise, Central Catholic pushed St. Bonaventure until the final two minutes of last Saturday's final.

The game left no doubt that Central Catholic could compete against many of Southern California's top large schools programs.

Long shots: After just nine games, the Buena girls' basketball team is nearly halfway toward breaking its program record for 3-point field goals in a season.

The 7-2 Bulldogs already have recorded 63 three-point goals, an average of 7.0 a game. The program's record is 132, set in 31 games by the 2000-01 team, an average of 4.26 a game. The team also has approached its all-time single-game record of 12 with 10 against Westlake.

Eight of the team's nine players have made 3-pointers. Amelia Mathis leads the team with 16. Amanda Padilla and Mallory Geske have 14 each. Others with 3-pointers include Marissa Brooks, Izzy Halpern, Holly Holcomb, Samantha Strang and Hayley Stewart.

The county record for 3-pointers in a season by a varsity high school girls' basketball team is 282 by Ventura in 32 games in the 2001-02 season, an average of 8.8 a game.

3 for all: Pacifica's Justin Jimenez missed the boys' basketball county record for most 3-point field goals in a game by one in the King Triton's Clash on the Coast Tournament.

Jimenez made nine 3-pointers in a 33-point effort against Bishop Diego. The county record is 10 by Royal's Brendon Norton against Lakeside (Wash.) two years ago.

Brittany Cabriales set the Simi Valley girls' basketball single-game record with nine 3-pointers against Louisville.

Fast falls: Sixteen seconds was all Camarillo 275-pound wrestler Aulana Lemalu needed to pin an opponent in the the Gold Coast Classic at Camarillo last Saturday. Another one of Lemalu's opponents took the count in 36 seconds.

Quick pins were common place in the 20-team event.

Julian Fergerson of Buena and Oscar Fino of Channel Islands pinned opponents in 20 and 29 seconds, respectively.

Camarillo's Mark Robles, the 112-pound champion, needed only a total of 8:05 to pin three opponents. Ventura's Jacob Archibeque ended his three matches in 10:25.

Paul Venegas of Rio Mesa had pins of 29 and 40 seconds in the 103-pound weight class.

Honored: The new snack bar at the refurbished Friedrich Pavilion at Santa Clara was named in honor of Martha Cvijanovich, wife of the school's retired longtime coach and administrator Lou Cvijanovich.

A dedication was made on Dec. 9 at the facility's grand reopening.

The snack bar will be known as "Mrs. C's Victory Cafe."
