More rain expected tonight

Heavy rains this morning gave county fire officials hope that bone-dry weather conditions would dissipate, raised the spectre of mud slides in recent burn areas and sent drivers skidding off roads in minor accidents.

"The rain is very much welcomed," Ventura County Fire Department Capt. Barry Parker said today. "It's going to assist in slowing down a very aggressive fire season."

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service issued flood watches for areas of Ventura County that severely burned in recent fires, said Stuart Seto, a weather specialist with the agency's Oxnard office.

Those include properties near the recent Ranch fires by Fillmore and Piru or the Night Sky fire in Moorpark, said Scott Holder, a hydrologist with the county's Watershed Protection District.

Today's rain storm — which began shortly before midnight Monday — dumped up to three-fourths of an inch in 12 hours, Seto said, citing a strong low-pressure area in Canada as the cause.

Rainfall totals as of 8 a.m., according to the Ventura County Watershed Protection District, included .33 inches at the Ventura County Government Center, .6 inches in El Rio, .63 inches in Saticoy and Piru, .6 inches in Oxnard, .05 inches in Moorpark and .15 inches in Thousand Oaks.

"It looks like we're going to get more than that," Seto said, of additional rainfall predicted for tonight.

Expect an additional .75 inches to 1 1/2 inches in the coastal regions and valleys to as much as 3 inches in the mountains, Seto said. Snow is expected over 6,500 feet, he added.

Tonight's storm will last until midnight, after which the chance of precipitation will drop to 20 percent for Wednesday. That will increase to 40 percent on Thursday, Seto said.
