Bellringer: Dec. 18
VENTURA COUNTY
Donor remembers friend from construction job
She didn't look at herself as a pioneer, but "Edie" Trunkey was, in her own way, said friend Rosalee Asbell, who gave $25 in Trunkey's name to The Star's annual Bellringer drive.
The two met in 1967, when Trunkey urged Asbell's boss to let her attend a conference for the National Association of Women in Construction.
Both were secretaries, but they toiled in the male-dominated world of construction. The pair quickly became friends and later formed the Ventura-Oxnard Chapter 139 of Women in Construction.
Both had cancer and survived, but this year, Trunkey's returned, and in October she succumbed to the illness.
"She'd never tell us her age exactly, so I have to guess it was 82," said Asbell, who is 75.
"She was just a good Christian woman, a sweet, happy, try-to-please kind of lady," said Asbell, who also gave $25 in memory of her mother-in-law and friend, Clara Asbell.
The Star's annual Bellringer drive will run through Christmas, with the newspaper publishing lists of readers' contributions.
All money raised will be given to the Salvation Army to serve needy local people.
